　　Who can forget the strange appearance of sumo wrestlers, those human mountains that face each other while slowly walking around inside a small circle? Sumo wrestling may seem strange and even simple, but the national sport of Japan has a lot of tradition.

　　Sumo started as a part of Japanese religious festivals. Eventually, the samurai began practicing sumo as a form of training. The government at that time only allowed sumo wrestling inside religious temples. So sumo took on its modern form, an interesting mixture of sport and ritual.

　　Sumo tournaments are held six times every year and last for fifteen days. So if you find yourself in Japan sometime soon, why not go and check out a sumo match?

　　谁能忘得了相扑选手那奇特的画面呢？那些面对面的大块头在一个小圆圈里慢慢地绕行。也许相扑看起来很奇怪，甚至很简单，但日本的这项民族体育项目包含了许多传统。

　　相扑运动是作为日本宗教节日的一部分开始的。最后，日本武士开始练习相扑来当作训练的一种形式。当时的日本政府只允许在宗教寺庙内进行相扑运动。因此相扑具有了其现代的形式──一种运动与宗教仪式的有趣结合。

　　相扑比赛每年举办6次，为期15天。因此如果你发现在不久以后的某一天自己身在日本，何不去看一场相扑大赛呢？

　　比赛前，选手会拍手唤醒众神(to awaken the gods)，撒盐(throw salt)以使比赛场地纯净，并且用力跺脚(to stamp their feet)以扫荡所有的邪恶(to crush all that is evil)。选手的最高等级是横纲(yokozuna)，据统计，自江户时代至今，只有64人得到了这项殊荣。
