As a follow-up activity to the Wu Guanzhong’s Ever Bright exhibition in Hong Kong, the Wu Guanzhong’s Engraving Exhibition was successfully held by Beijing FESCO and Beijing Ever Bright c and Art Development Co. in New Millennium Art Gallery in Beijing from April 27 to May 12.
Now, Mr. Wu Guanzhong, is getting old and his painting painted in recent years are all art treasures. His original painting works are not for sale any more. Therefore, Mr. Wu Guangzhong regards the collotype printing of his painting works as“Wu Guanzhong’s Engravings”and puts his special name stamp on each of the reproductions. A good reproduction is the same as the original in term of appreciation. But there is a great difference in price and ordinary collectors can afford them. As Mr Wu said:
Some people believe that what is rare is precious. However, I don’t think so.“Being rare”doesn’t mean“being precious”. The art products created with hands are the ones without duplicates which are really precious. The cloned paintings look almost the same as the originals. Therefore, the cloning of good art products should be encouraged and the cloning art is improving with each passing day, which is the trend of art development and the development trend of the time.
Mr. Wu Guanzhong, with his penname-Tu,is from Yixing City of Jiangsu Province. He entered the Hangzhou State Arts School for study in 1938. He learned sketching and oil painting from Mr.Lin Fengmin in 1939 and Chinese traditional painting from Mr. Pan Tianshou. In1946 he went to Paris and studied oil painting in Paris High Fine Arts College. He returned to China in 1950 and taught in the Architecture Department of Qinghua University, the Central Fine Arts Institute and the Central Arts and Crafts Institute. He is an executive council member of the China Fine Arts Association and professor of the Central Art and Crafts Institute. In his early painting time,he mainly made his water color and oil paintings. From 1970s, he made his efforts for traditional Chinese paintings. He not only used the traditional Chinese brushes and ink for panting and the Chinese traditional way of painting layout, but also mix them with the western way of painting, attaching great importance on the relationship between the realistic and abstract world to reflect his artistic feelings for what he wants to paint. He likes to paint on Xuan paper with big brushes, making light and detailed paintings. His paintings are beautiful and elegant and full of poetic flavor. They have been exhibited many times at home and broad and are collected by the Chinese and foreign museums and galleries.
Sailing at Night
At nights, the ships on the Yangtse River sailsintosthe dark gorges, giving people a severe situation. Sometimes, there is moon in the dark sky with stars twinkling, which also gives people the sense of fear.
There are many cities, layers after layers, along the two sides of the Yangtse River, presenting us a spectacular scene. During nights, there are lots of lights in the cities, which look extremely splendid and magnificent. Whenever we sail through the mountainous cities, I always enjoy the night scene very much. But I can’t find a way to present this spectacular scene in the way of painting.
I have tried many times to paint this night scene but every time, the paintings were too dark and could not reflect the activities on the river, thus losing the attractiveness of the darkness. However, this time I have succeed in making this painting by projecting the structure of darkness and make the darkness as the background which might be influence by a piece of Beijing Opera entitled“The Crossroad”.---Wu Guanzhong
The Urban Net
Ship sail on the Tai Lake. There are a lot of black triangular flags on the water, just like crows which have lost their ways . These black triangular flags are not crows but signal indicating the nets under the water. They really damage the scenery of the lake. There are no longer beautiful feelings when sailing on the lake. Fishes and shrimps are nowshavingsa hard life.
In the cities, there area lot of buildings, reflecting the rich material life of the urban people. However, this can not cover up the hardship of the people’s life, the merciless competition among them, just like the fishes and shrimps. Now, the urban people have fallensintosthe metropolitan nets and life-seeking nets.-Wu Guanzhong
The Builders’Song
People usually make scaffoldings before they construct high buildings. High buildings can be constructed on scaffoldings. When the buildings are completed, the scaffoldings will be moved away and be moved away forever.
It is not easy to make the high scaffolding as they should be made as high as the buildings. They crisscross with each other and are exposed to people. People can easily see the construction workers working hard on the scaffoldings. It is a colorful painting, implying that the workers are constructing magnificent buildings.
Many scaffoldings left us unforgettable impression-the impression of complicated configuration. But nowadays, scaffoldings are covered up and can no longer be seen by people. Therefore, this painting entitled“Music of Construction”records the time and life of the scaffoldings.-Wu Guanzhong
Village of Bridges
This painting shows the bridges in arch forms, rivers flowing in twits and turns and the farm houses in clusters, forming a beautiful scene of a country of bridges, rivers and farm houses. A country of bridges (or a country of water) in beautiful geometric figure are connected by arch bridges, presenting a spectacular village scene. In my opinion, anything that plays the key role of connecting various parts has the beauty of the bridges.-Wu Guanzhong
Two Swallow
A white wall occupying a large part of the painting lies across it, dividing itsintostwo. It is the Queen in the painting. The vertical doors and window together with the wall reflect the unity of the white and black. In structure, it has the same effects as Mondrian’s paintings. However, when two swallows fly in,my hometown is no longer what is in the mind of the western painters.-Wu Guanzhong
Long, Still Day
It is difficult to find a very quiet place even in the deep mountains. As the saying goesthe tree may prefer calm but the wind will not subside, which means there is no easy life and the struggles taking place among people. Tao Yuanming could not hear the noised from the streets even he lived in the downtown area, which was really not easy.
I visited a birds’paradise in Xinhui County, Guangdong Province. But as soon as I entered it, the birds flew away immediately and the paradise disappeared. After I return from the forests, I made a huge painting about the forest with birds in it, entitled“The Birds’Paradise”. In the painting, I pursued the sense of mistry from the diversity.
One day, I was excited by the natural patterns on a large marble which look like trees and birds and I made this pointing. But what I want to tell people in this painting is that there is peace forever without any wind.
