Excerpts
The Black Neighbor Protests Against Hank for His Racist Manner
Man: You see these two boys here? They're my sons.
Hank: They're on my property.
Man: There's no need to be scared of no little boys<注1>. They ain't come to hurt you. There's no need to be letting off no shotgun to tell them to leave, either. You understand?
Hank: Then keep them off my property.
Man: They're friends to your son, okay? He invited them here. They ain't trespassing<注2>, they ain't hurting nobody. Next time you wanna play cowboy<注3>, I'm over here all the time.
Hank: Well, you keep them off my property.
Man: I think you heard me, sir.
Hank: I think you heard me too. All right?
Man: Come on boys, let's go.
Dialogue between Hank and Sonny before Sonny Kills Himself
Hank: Get up! Get out of my goddamn house right now!
Sonny: (Pulls out his gun and points it to Hank) Hey! You get out! Come on! (Pushes Hank out of his room) You lousy piece of shit! Get up. What are you gonna do, huh? What are you gonna do?! (Chases Hank to the sitting room) See? How do you like that, huh? Come on. Are you a tough guy now? Are you tough? Say something. Say something! (Kicks Hank) Get up. You hate me. Answer me. You hate me, don't you?
Hank: Yeah, I hate you. I always did.
Sonny: Why, I always loved you. (Shoots himself)
Dialogue between Buck and Leticia
Leticia: (Knocking on the door) Hello! Hank? (Buck is watching TV at home.) It's Leticia. (Leticia pushes open the door and comes in) I'm coming on in, Hank. Hank!
Buck: Who are you? You just walked in my house?
Leticia: My bad. I doubt...
Buck: Hank? You're looking for Hank?
Leticia: Yes. Is he here?
Buck: Who're you?
Leticia: My name is Leticia Musgrove. And...me and Hank is...friends.
Buck: Musgrove? (Leticia nods) Please, little darling...have you got a cigarette?
Leticia: Yeah. But it looks to me like you don誸need to be smoking.
Buck: Come on. Have you got one? (Leticia puts down the hat box and takes out a cigarette from her hand bag) Match?
Leticia: So, is Hank here? (Picks up the hat box)
Buck: Yeah, yeah. He'll be back shortly. I'm Buck, his father. Is that for Hank?
Leticia: Yeah. It's a gift.
Buck: I'll see he gets it. (Leticia hands the box to Buck who opens it) Woo! (Puts the hat on) Damn! Hank must have done something right to deserve a fine hat like this.
Leticia: I guess he did.
Buck: In my prime, I had a thing for nigger juice<注4> myself. Hank's just like his daddy. He ain't a man till he split dark oak. (Leticia is shocked and walks out of the house in a rage).
