Maude and Simon have been traveling around Chile for a month.
S:Where to next? We could hit Argentina. ... Or maybe we can head to Easter Island!
M:Perfect! I've always wanted to see firsthand those weird monoliths with the gigantic heads. People say they were put there by aliens.
S:Oh, get a grip! Those heads are called "moai" and were definitely the work of humans.
M:OK, smartie--since you seem to know so much--who did build them?
S:Most archaeologists believe they were built by the Polynesians who discovered Easter Island in 400 A.D.--I've been doing my homework!
M:Apparently. So, you know who built them, but do you know why?
S:No. Nobody does. But they may have been used as a conduit for communicating with the gods.
M:"May have"? Sounds like the moai are quite the enigma. Did the early Easter Islanders keep no records?
S:Nope. And it's kind of strange, considering they were the only people in Oceania who actually had a written language.
M:That is mysterious! Maybe the moai were built by a forgotten civilization and Easter Island is part of a lost continent!
S:Like Atlantis? Yeah, right. What's more mysterious to me is how you can actually believe in that stuff!
