Mina is exploring a night market with her friend Sam.
S:I've got to have one of those cute puppies!
M:Sam, what are you thinking? You should never buy a puppy on impulse.
S:I'm not: I've always wanted a dog. Besides, they're Labradors, and Labradors are really fashionable right now.
M:I can't believe what I'm hearing. Pets aren't fashion accessories!
S:Oh, come on! There's no harm in choosing a puppy because of its looks.
M:Try telling that to the scores of would-be-loyal dalmations that ended up getting dumped on streets.
S:Ouch! Good point. Parents bought them for their kids because of the movie, right? But without considering the demands of dog ownership.
M:Exactly. And, along with thousands of other dogs that deserve a home, they're now condemned to trying to survive on the streets.
S:I know that usually means suffering disease, hunger, and an early death.
M:It's an appalling situation. And if I told you what happens when they're taken to the dog pound, you'd be horrified.
S:OK. OK. You're convinced me: Buying a puppy on the spur of the moment would be a dumb thing to do.
