Lesson Five之习语篇

　　辽宁教育出版社于2003年1月出版了《王强口语》系列丛书，丛书共三册，并分别配有语音磁带，适合不同程度的英语学习者使用。以下是《王强口语》第一册第五课的习语篇部分。

　　VCU=Very Commonly Used 很常用

　　SU=Sometimes Used 有时用

　　RU=Rarely Used 不常用

　　Retell the stories in English using the provided expressions, and then paraphrase the highlighted idioms:

　　1.pave the way: VCU

　　- 通过启动 (start) 这些新的关于欧美学生来华学习的交换项目 (exchange program)，我们正努力为进一步促进中美、中欧关系 (for better…relations) 铺平道路 (pave the way)。我们相信尝试并开始建立 (build) 更好的相互关系and为了未来的繁荣
(prosperity) 和了解 (understanding) 开拓 (create) 新的道路是极其重要的。

　　2. catch someone's eye: VCU

　　- Honey你能借给我300美元吗 (borrow)？

　　- 干什么用 (what)？

　　- 我昨天路过购物大街 (main shopping street) and一个橱窗里的漂亮的红连衣裙 (dress) 让我好喜欢 (catch one's eye)。我当时没有想买东西，只是往家走 and 它真的把我给吸引住了 (get one's attention) ——真是太漂亮了！

　　- Well, 如果你那么喜欢它 (that much)，你可以用信用卡 (credit card) 购买，and我来付钱！

　　3. keep one's hands off: VCU

　　（两个人正在街上看一辆车）

　　- John，你相信这款BMW跑车值,000美元吗！

　　（车主走过来）

　　- 嘿！别碰 (keep one's hands off )我的新车。

　　- 对不起, sir. 我们正在夸奖 (admire) 你的车太漂亮了。

　　- 你们看可以，but请不要碰 (touch) 它，好吗？这车可是我的宝贝 (baby)！

　　- 我真的很抱歉，我并没想碰它 (mean)。你能不能让我们看看车的里面 (mind, interior)？据说 (suppose)新款BMW里面全都是意大利皮做的椅垫 (100%, leather, upholstery)。

　　- 你说的对。是意大利皮。你们过来看看 (show)……

　　4. open someone's eyes: VCU

　　- 你知道上周四学生们去乡下郊游的事儿吗 (trip, countryside)？

　　- Yes，他们回来后都很兴奋 (excite)。I think亲眼看到 (first hand) 农民们在农村劳作得多么辛苦 (hard work, do) 真是让学生们明白了(open one's eyes to something) 要花多少努力和劳动才会种出他们每天吃的食物 (effort, labor, go into, grow)。

　　- 我知道，我想这对于年轻人是个极好的经历，让他们能意识 (realiz) 到种(grow)一个西瓜(watermelon)和产一把大米（produce, handful）需要付出多少精力(energy)。这次学校出游的经历他们是不会忘记的(something, forget)。

　　5. regain one's feet: VCU

　　- 来自Russia的奥林匹克花样滑冰选手 (figure) 多多少少算是做了出色的表演 (more or less, brillant, performance)。惟一的问题是当他们在做双人760度旋转时(double, 760–degress spin)，那个女选手摔倒在冰上 (fall) and她的同伴不得不帮她站起来(regain one's feet)。

　　- Really？这可太糟糕了。她整个摔到冰上 (all the way) 她的同伴还不得不帮她站起来 (get up)？我敢肯定评委们 (judge) 会因此扣掉几分 (take off, point) No matter你动作完成得多好，if你摔倒一次，你绝拿不到金牌 (medal)。
　

　　Guess the meaning of the highlighted expression from each context.

　　1. take a leaf out of someone's book: SU

　　- The feelings and style of your recent paintings look as if you're taking a leaf out of Picasso's book. I don't mean you're copying his work and style exactly, but the influence is very obvious. The way you exaggerate the face of your subjects in the portraits you paint and the colors you use all remind me very much of his work.

　　2. leave someone holding the bag: RU

　　- Hey, Rick. How was the meeting with the manager yesterday? I'm sorry for notshavingsbeen there. We kind of left you alone, didn't we?

　　- Totally! It wasn't nice to leave me holding the bag like that. You know all too well that the manager wanted to see us all after work to ask for an explanation about the incident this morning. To make excuses saying you all had to leave work early was very unfair. It looked like I was the only one to blame, which clearly isn't true.

　　3. carry the weight of the world on one's shoulders: SU

　　- Jerry, I really don't know what to do. I have no energy to deal with all the problems I have right now. It seems that all the bad things that could happen to me are happening at the same time.

　　- I know, I know; sometimes you just feel like you're carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. You see no possible solution to your problems and you feel overwhelmed by it all. But don't worry. You will soon realize that your problems are not so serious and that you just need to deal with them one by one. Then they will feel a lot smaller.
