Read aloud
the following frequently asked questions and study how the native speakers
would answer them.
1. Do you have any big plans for the end
of summer?
A: "Not really. I wouldn't mind
getting a girlfriend before the end of summer, though."
B: "I'm actually headed to the travel
agency right now. I'm thinking of going to see the Rockies."
C: "No. I'm just working on developing
projects for the fall."
2. What's the craziest or most relaxing
thing you've done while vacationing?
A: "I slept all day. I didn't leave
the hotel room at all for the whole day when I was in Niagara Falls."
B: "I don't get vacations because I'm
busy being a mom. Maybe I'll get one next year."
C: "I party a little bit, but it's
never anything crazy."
Exercise: Based on what you've just
learned about the way that a native English speaker would handle a
question, try to express your opinions briefly and clearly by answering
the following questions.
1.The Academy(n.学院) of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences awards(v.授予)gold statuettes(n.小雕像)known as
Oscars. The 131/2-inch Oscar depicts(v.雕画出)a man holding a sword(n.剑)and
standing on a film reel(n.胶片盘、卷). The award allegedly(adv.据说)got
its name when a secretary at the Academy commented(v.评论说)that it
looked like her uncle Oscar.
If you could design a new statuette to
replace the Oscar, what would it look like?
2. Conditioning(n.适应性训练) is
emphasized(v.强调) in almost every sport. Vince Lombardi once said,
"Fatigue(n.疲劳) makes cowards (n.胆小鬼)of us all."
What sport do you think requires the
highest level of physical conditioning?
