　　An anthropologist(人类学家) and a team of researchers have unveiled(除去……的面纱) some of the arcane(鲜为人知的) rituals(老规矩) of British pubs--starting with the difficulty of getting a drink. Most pubs have no waiters--you have to go to the bar to buy drinks. This may sound inconvenient(不方便), but there is a hidden purpose.

　　Pub culture is designed to promote(促进) sociability(社交性) in a society known for its reserve. Standing at the bar for service allows you to chat with others waiting to be served. The bar counter (柜台)is possibly the only site in the British Isles in which friendly conversation(交谈) with strangers is considered entirely(完全地) appropriate(适当的) and rea1ly quite normal(正常的) behavior(行为).

　　The trouble is that if you do not follow the local(当地的) rules, the experience may fall flat. For example, if you are in a big group, it is best if only one or two people go to buy the drinks. Nothing irritates(使恼怒) the regular(固定的) customers and bar staff(酒保) more than a gang of(一群) strangers blocking(阻塞) all access(通道) to the bar while they chat and dither(犹豫) about what to order.

　　Reserve做动词用，常用的意思是“预订”，比如你打算定一个两人的桌子，就可以说：I’d like to reserve a table for two.还有，在许多网页的最下端，都有all rights reserve的字样，这里的意思是“保留”版权。

　　在这段中，reserve用作名词，意思是“冷淡、克制”等，一个词，恰到好处地概括了英国人的性格特点。举个例子：

　　He spoke with reserve.

　　他说话谨慎。

　　问题是如果你不入乡随俗的话，(if you do not follow the local rules)你将一无所获。(the experience may fall flat)譬如说，你们若是团体前往，那最好是一个或两个人前去买酒。酒吧常客和酒保最腻味的就是一大伙人(Nothing irritates the regular customers and bar staff more than a gang of strangers)一边聊着一边又优柔寡断不知喝什么酒好，(while they chat and dither about what to order)把通往吧台的路给堵住。(blocking all access to the bar)

　　接触Fall，最先了解到的意思就是“跌倒”，这个我们在初中就已经接触过。比如：

　　A: What happened to Jack? He hasn't shown up for three days.

　　杰克怎么了？我三天没看到他了。

　　B: Haven't you heard? He fell down the stairs and broke his right leg.

　　你没听说吗？他跌下楼梯摔断了右腿。

　　推理可知，fall flat就是“直挺挺地到下去”，比如下面这个人晕车了，就会出现这样的情况：

　　She fell flat on her face as she got out of the car.

　　她一下车便直挺挺地脸朝下倒了下去。

　　可是，在下面这段对话中，fall flat却有着另外的含义，大家猜猜看！

　　A: I felt sorry for Danny when no one agreed with his plan.

　　没有人赞成丹尼的计划，我真替他难过。

　　B: Yes, it's really embarrassing when your ideas fall flat.

　　对呀，没人理会你的主意时，真糗。

　　猜对了吗？fall flat就是“达不到预想效果；彻底失败”的意思。不知大家注意到没有，这fall flat的主语，不是某个人，而是某个想法、某样东西，讲出来完全是一种“对事不对人”的态度，呵呵，可能这样讲，会减少一点尴尬的感觉吧。所以，如果一个人的笑话讲得不好，千万别说He fell flat.而要说His jokes all fell flat.
