　　The name Christmas is short for "Christ's Mass". A Mass is a kind of Church service. Christmas is a religious(宗教上的) festival(节日). It is the day we celebrate(庆祝) as the birthday of Jesus.

　　“圣诞节”这个名称是“基督弥撒”的缩写。弥撒是教会的一种礼拜仪式。耶诞节是一个宗教节。我们把它当作耶苏的诞辰來庆祝，因而又名耶诞节。

　　The virgin's name was Mary was betrothed(订婚) to Joseph. Before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit(圣灵). Joseph her husband was minded (有意做……) to put her away secretly. While he thought about these things, Gabriel, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him did not be afraid to take Mary as wife. And Mary will bring forth(生产) a Son, and he shall call his name, Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins(罪孽).

　　童女马利亚与约瑟订婚，却发现自己怀了圣灵的孩子。他的丈夫约瑟想悄悄抛弃她，可就在他考虑这事的时候，一位使者加伯列在梦中晓谕约瑟，叫他不要因为马利亚未婚怀孕而不要她，反而要与她成亲，把那孩子起名为“耶苏”，意思是要他把百姓从罪恶中救出來。

　　1.短语short for意思是“……是……的简略形式”，或“……简称为……”，用be short for结构表达。

　　UN is short for the United Nations.

　　UN是联合国的缩略形式。

　　Will is short for William.

　　威尔是威廉的简称。

　　把short for倒过来，for short意思是“简略地”或“简化地”，相当于副词。如：

　　His name is James. We call him Jim for short.

　　他的名字叫James。我们简称他为Jim。

　　2.短语put away，意思很多，主要有以下用法。

　　(1)表示“把……收好、放好”，如：

　　Put away the tools after work, will you?

　　工作结束后请把工具收拾好。

　　(2)表示“储存”，如：

　　You should put some money away for your old age.

　　你应该为老年而储蓄一些钱。

　　(3)表示“放弃、抛弃”，如：

　　She put away all prejudices.

　　她摒弃一切成见。

　　字母大写规则

　　字母的大小写，读文章的时候我们通常不太在意，所以写的时候，有关大小写方面的错误就层出不穷。今天，我们就来总结归纳一下。一般来说，大写规则有以下几条：

　　(1)大写每句话的第一个字母和直接引语的第一字母，如：

　　He said,” He is going to Shanghai next week”.

　　(2)大写专有名词，或用作专有名词的部分普通名词，如：

　　the Holy Spirit

　　the Pacifc Ocean(太平洋)

　　(3)大写缩写字母。如：

　　MPA, MBA, BBC

　　(4)标题要大写。如：

　　China High School Students(中国中学生报)

　　The Fox and the Lion (狐狸和狮子)

　　(5)头衔在专有名词前要大写，在专有名词后就小写。例如：

　　Captain Smith --------Smith, the captain

　　Uncle George-------- George, my uncle
