　　This winter has seen a new type of influenza1 sweep the globe. Britain, France, and the United States were all hit especially hard.2 In the United States, the flu outbreak3 was so severe that shortages of the influenza vaccine4 were common.

　　Recently, dangerous new varieties of flu have appeared. People traveling internationally help these viruses5 spread quickly, and scientists worry that an even deadlier6 flu outbreak could happen soon. In fact, scientists predict the next severe flu season will begin sometime between 2004 and 2005, which only compounds7 their fears of the return of SARS.
