固定搭配往往具有特殊的含义.它们既是词汇语法中的要点,也是阅读理解、完形填空和翻译试题中的考点、难点.下面对四、六级试题中常出现的固定搭配进行归纳、讲解:

　　1. more A than B: 与其说是B,倒不如说是A

　　The children are more frightened than hurt. 这些孩子与其说是受伤,倒不如说是受到惊吓.

　　He seemed old to me, more like a grandfather than a father. 我总感到他长相老,更像祖父而不是父亲.

　　2. more than:

　　1)超出,超过……的

　　It is not unusual for workers in that region to be paid more than a month late. 这一地区工人的工资经常被拖欠一个月以上.

　　2) (口语) 十分,非常,极其

　　句型:more than happy /glad /willing etc. to do sth. 非常愿意做某事

　　They were more than willing to help. 他们非常愿意帮忙.

　　I am more than pleased. 我十分高兴.

　　3. none other than: 不是别的,正是,原来是

　　It's none other than the manager himself. 正是经理本人.

　　It's none other than Jones. 不是别人,正是琼斯.

　　4. other things being equal:如果其它条件/情形都一样

　　Other things being equal, a man who expresses himself effectively is sure to succeed more rapidly than a man whose command of language is poor. 如果其它条件相等,一个能充分表达自己的人肯定比一个不善言辞的人更容易成功.

　　5. would do well to (do sth.): 最好还是;有好处;明智

　　Hospital administration and doctors everywhere would do well to follow Beth Israel's example. 各地医院的行政部门和医生最好还是效法一下 Beth Israel医院的榜样.

　　You would do well to learn from him. 你最好还是向他学习.

　　6. in that: (书面语)因为,由于;在……这一点上

　　Liquids are like solids in that they have a definite volume. 液体和固体一样,因为它们都有一定的体积.

　　Men differ from brutes in that they can think and speak. 人不同于禽兽之处在于人能思考和说话.

　　7. have no choice but to do sth. : 只能……,别无选择

　　That was so serious a matter that I had no choice but to call the police. 那件事情事关重大,我别无选择,只好请警察.

　　8. when it comes to sth. / doing sth. : 当涉及……时;当说到……时

　　She becomes nervous whenever it comes to learning mathematics. 只要一说到学数学,她就紧张.

　　9. tend to (do sth.): 易于,往往

　　The paper says people tend to feel unwell if they sleep less than six hours a day. 报纸上说,如果每天睡眠少于6小时,人往往会觉得不舒服.

　　10. as / so far as I know : 据我所知

　　As far as I know, whether there will be such a trip is yet to be decided.据我所知,是否有这种旅行尚未决定.

　　11. have a great /significant impact on sb. / sth.:对……产生很大影响

　　The liberation of women in the early part of the 20th century and the social and economic effects of World War II had a great impact on traditional family life. 二十世纪初的妇女解放运动以及二战所产生的社会与经济影响都给传统的家庭生活带来了巨大的冲击.

　　类似结构:have an/no effect on sb.

　　12. in terms of:从……的角度,根据,按照;用……的字眼

　　The trip was enjoyable but not fruitful in terms of business. 这次旅行虽愉快但从生意的角度而言没有成就.

　　13. cannot / can never be too...:再……也不为过;越……越好

　　You cannot be too careful when you drive a car. 开车时越小心越好.

　　You cannot be too careful when crossing the street. 横穿马路时越小心越好.

　　14. be supposed to:应该,理应

　　He was supposed to go back to Shanghai this morning, but of course the accident prevented him. 他今天上午该回上海,但显然这次事故使他耽搁了.
