  录音原文:

Listen to the following two passages and choose the best answer to each question. Each passage will be read twice.

  Passage A

There is a story going round at the moment about a well-known journalist who went to interview Jack Parrish at a smart New York restaurant. The journalist was late, but fortunately, when he arrived,he found the great man was not yet there. After fifteen minutes, a waiter came up to him. "There's some young man at the door who says he's supposed to be having lunch with you. I think he's trying to be funny, because he says his name is Jack Parrish!"

But of course it was. The twenty-four-year-old is becoming famous for the fact that he doesn't look like the owner of one of the world's most successful computer companies. His manner is polite, his voice is quiet and his clothes are clearly not expensive. Two years ago, when he started his own company, no one had heard of him. Friends say that he hasn't changed at all. He hasn't even moved out of his parents' house. So what does he do with his money? It's all in his company. But some people in the computer world are getting nervous-and they are right. It won't be long before someone in another company picks up the phone to hear that quiet voice saying that he's the new boss.

  录音原文:

  Passage B

During the Ice Age,early humans had to face freezing weather. They needed to protect their bodies from the cold.

Early humans were hunters. To keep warm, they covered themselves with the skin of the animals they killed. As time went on, they learned to shape animal skins into clothes.

To make their clothes, early humans invented new tools. They used a sharp stone knife to skin animals and to cut the hides. With a stone tool called an awl, they made holes in the animal skins. Then they used strips of hide to lace the skins together. Most importantly, they invented a needle with an eye and began the art of sewing. Some needles were made from the leg bones of large birds. Others were made of ivory.

Clothes made from animal skins became hard. To make them soft, early humans put them in water and then beat them. In time, they learned to make skins softer by rubbing them with animal fats.

Later, people learned how to keep the animal skins for a long time. They put the skins in water that they had first put in the tough outer covering of an oak or willow tree. In this way, they turned the hides into leather. Leather did not rot or wear out easily.
