Thirty-six years ago, a large number of seabirds in Monterey Bay, California, began acting very strangely. Groups of the birds appeared in the sky, then fell to earth. They flew into objects, flapped their wings and attacked a few people. Scientists called this strange event a bird riot.

Two years later, people around the world saw an expanded, frightening pictures of this incident in the movie called "The Birds". The movie director Alfred Hitchcock lived only a few miles away from where the incident happened. He developed the story and made it into the movie.

More than 30 years after the first event, scientist David Garrison of the University of California at Santa Cruz announced he had discovered the reason for the strange actions by the birds in 1961. Mr Garrison says the birds were poisoned by a certain kind of acid(迷幻药). The acid is produced by a sea plant.

Scientists first discovered the acid in 1987, when 100 people became sick in Canada after eating mussels, a kind of shellfish taken from the sea. Four people died. Others suffered stomach pain, became dizzy and lost memory.

Scientists also showed that acid was the cause of sick and dead birds that appeared on Monterey Bay in 1991. That same year, a scientist found the acid in anchovies, a fish eaten by many sea birds.

Mr Garrison believes incidents like the one in 1961 happen after a group of anchovies eat the poisoned sea plants, and then seabirds eat the anchovies.

Mr Garrison says that the acid poisoning may be more common than has been thought. He says people should not eat crabs(螃蟹),mussels and other creatures taken from areas of the sea near the coast. He also advises people to avoid eating anchovies.

Many people think that Abraham Lincoln publicly came out against slavery from the beginning of his term as president. This is not the case. Whatever his private feelings, he did not criticize slavery publicly. Fearful that the southern states would secede, or leave, the Union, he pledged to respect the southern states' rights to own slaves. He also pledged that the government would respect the southern states' runaway slave laws. These laws required all citizens to return runaway slaves to their masters.

Clearly, Lincoln did not want the country torn apart by a civil war. In the following statement, written in 1861 shortly after he became President, he made it clear that the federal government would do its best to avoid conflict with the southern states.

I hold that, in contemplation of the universal law and the Constitution, the Union of these states is perpetual... No state, upon its own mere motion, can lawfully get out of the Union... I shall take care, as the Constitution itself expressly enjoins upon me, that the laws of the Union be faithfully executed in all the states... The power confided to me will be used to hold, occupy, and possess the property and places belonging to the government, and to collect the duties and imposts...

In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow-countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you. You can have no conflict without yourselves being the aggressors. You have no oath registered in heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to "preserve, protect and defend" it.

  4. Lincoln is telling the southern states that the government _______ .

  A. does want a war

  B. doesn't want a war

  C. will stop a war D. likes a war

  5. As President, Lincoln pledged to "preserve, protect and defend" _______ .

A。 whose + n. = the + n. + of which 4.C。 在本句中,the very reason 在定语从句中作know的宾语,而先行词前有very。故选that。 5. A。 7. B。否定副词,如not,never,seldom,little等位于句首时,句子要部分倒装。 8. C 9.

  VIII. 1-5 CABBA 6-10 CDCDC 11-15 DDBBD 16-20 CBACA

  IX. ( A)1-3 CCA (B)4-5BC

  X. 1. in改为on.on duty,值班。 2. 1ast前加the。 3. this改为that。 4. 第二个a改为the。特指London。 5. 6. below改为after。 7. 去掉day。 9. instead后加of。 10. 正确。
