Part II Reading Comprehension (35 minutes)

Directions: There are four reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.

  Passage One

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

Man will never conquer space. Such a statement may sound ludicrous (荒唐的),after we have made such long strides into space. Yet it expresses a truth that our forefathers knew and we have forgotten one that our descendants must learn again, in heartbreak and loneliness.

Our age is in many ways unique, full of phenomena that never occurred before and may never come again. They distort our thinking, making us believe that what is true now will be true forever, though perhaps on a larger scale. Because we have annihilated (消除) distance on this planet, we imagine that we can do the same in space. The truth is otherwise, and we will see it more clearly if we forget the present and turn our minds toward the past.

To our ancestors, the vastness of the earth was a dominant factor in their thoughts and lives. No man could ever see more than a tiny fraction of the earth. Only a lifetime ago, parents waved farewell to their emigrating children, knowing they would never see them again.

Now, within one incredible generation, all this has changed. Psychologically as well as physically, there are no longer any remote places on earth. When a friend leaves for that was once a distant country, he cannot feel the same sense of irrevocable (无法改变的) separation that saddened our forefathers. We know that he is only hours away by jetliner, and we have merely to reach for the telephone to hear his voice.

When the satellite communication network is fully established, it will be as easy to see friends on the far side of the earth as to talk to them on the other side of the town. Then the world will shrink no more. From a world that has become too small, we are moving out into one that will be forever too large, whose frontiers will recede from us always more swiftly than we can reach out toward them.

  21. According to the author, ________.

  A) we have made little progress into space

  B) our forefathers are more intelligent than we

  C) our descendants must learn the truth again

  D) our age is the same as the past and the future

  22. How can we see the truth more clearly according to the author?

  A) By turning our minds toward the future.

  B) By turning our minds toward the past.

  C) By concentrating on the present.

  D) By concentrating on the future.

  23. There are no longer any remote places on earth, because ________.

  A) there are too many people

  B) there are advanced communication instruments

  C) psychology has developed

  D) our age is unique

  24. The last word of the passage, the pronoun "them", refers to ________.

  A) the space's frontiers

  B) the earth's frontiers

  C) the sun's frontiers

  D) satellites

  25. What is the best title of the passage?

  A) Our Unique Age

  B) The Truth Distorted

  C) We Will Never Conquer Space

  D) Communication Network

  Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

In the late 1960's, many people in North America turned their attention to environmental problems, and new steel-and-glass skyscrapers were widely criticized. Ecologists pointed out that a cluster of tall buildings in a city often overburdens public transportation and parking lot capacities.

Skyscrapers are also lavish (大方的) consumers, and wasters, of electric power. In one recent year the addition of 17 million square feet of skyscraper office space in New York City raised the peak daily demand for electricity by 120,000 kilowatts-enough to supply the entire city of Albany, New York, for a day.

Glass-walled skyscrapers can be especially wasteful. The heat loss (or gain) through a wall of half-inch plate glass is more than ten times that through a typical masonry (砖瓦结构) wall filled with insulation board. To lessen the strain on heating and air-conditioning equipment builders of skyscrapers have begun to use double-glazed panels of glass, and reflective glasses coated with silver or gold mirror films that reduce glare as well as heat gain. However, mirror-walled skyscrapers raise the temperature of the surrounding air and affect neighboring buildings.

Skyscrapers put a severe strain on a city's sanitation facilities, too. If fully occupied, the two World Trade Center Towers in New York City would alone generate 2.25 million gallons of raw sewage each year-as much as a city the size of Stamford, Connecticut which has a population of more than 119,000.

Skyscrapers also interfere with television reception, block bird flyways, and obstruct air traffic. In Boston in the late 1960's some people even feared that shadows from skyscrapers would kill the grass on Boston Common.

Still, people continue to build skyscrapers for all the reasons that they have always built them-personal ambition, civic pride and the desire of owners to have the largest possible amount of rentable space.

  26. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.

  A) compare skyscrapers with other modern structures

  B) describe skyscrapers and their effect on the environment

  C) advocate the use of masonry in the construction of skyscrapers

  D) illustrate some architectural designs of skyscrapers

  27. According to the passage, what is one disadvantage of skyscrapers that have mirrored walls?

  A) The exterior surrounding air is heated.

  B) The windows must be cleaned daily.

  C) Construction time is increased.

  D) Extra air-conditioning equipment is needed.

  28. According to the passage, in the late 1960's some residents of Boston were concerned with which aspect of skyscrapers?

  A) The noise from their construction.

  B) The removal of trees from building sites.

  C) The harmful effects on the city's grass.

  D) The high cost of rentable office space.

  29. The author raises issues that would most concern which of the following groups?

  A) Electricians.

  B) Environmentalists.

  C) Aviators.

  D) Teachers.

  30. Where in the passage does the author compare the energy consumption of skyscrapers with that of a city?

  A) Lines 8-14.B) Lines 15-17.

  C) Lines 20-22.D) Lines 23-25.

  Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Seasonal Affective Disorder, often called SAD, is a type of winter depression that affects millions of people. It usually starts in late fall, with the decrease in daylight hours, and ends in spring when the days get longer.

SAD symptoms usually come in recurring episodes that begin in late fall and stop in the spring and often include the following: sleep problems, sleeping an average of two extra hours each night, reluctance to get up in the morning; changes in appetite, overeating, weight gain; depression, feelings of hopelessness, misery and anxiety; fatigue, lack of energy, increased feelings of sleepiness; loss of libido, decreased interest in sex and physical contact.

The most successful treatment for SAD is light therapy-spending anywhere from 30 minutesto two hours in front of a light box, preferably in the morning (light in the evenings may cause insomnia). But ordinary light bulbs are not strong enough. The average home or office lights deliver an intensity of 200-500 lux, but the minimum dose necessary to treat SAD is 2,500 lux. Some light boxes deliver up to 10,000 lux, which can shorten treatment time. Some drugs such as paroxetine and sertraline can be effective in treating the depressive symptoms of SAD when combined well with light therapy. Psychotherapy or counseling may help a person cope as well.

Not everyone who suffers from difficulties in the winter has SAD-some may just have the winter blues. But if you are in a slump, take a cue from some of the SAD research and try the following: wear bright colors to cheer yourself and those around you; bring fresh flowers into your home whenever possible; get outdoors as often as you can.

  31. What does this passage mainly talk about?

  A) Seasonal Affective Disorder is a winter depression that affects millions of people.

  B) How to cope with Seasonal Affective Disorder.

  A) The same symptom as SAD.

  B) Sadness or low spirits in winter.

  C) A kind of disease mostly occurring in winter.

  D) High mood in coldness.

  34. The effective treatments of SAD include the following except________.

  A) Winter blues is more serious than SAD.

  B) Everyone having winter problems suffers from SAD.

  C) Staying in doors and keeping warm can help cope with winter difficulties.

  D) Some people may just have winter blues instead of SAD.

  Passage Four

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

If there is any single factor that makes for success in living, it is the ability to profit by defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because the person was able to analyze defeat and actually profit by it in his next undertaking. Confuse defeat with failure, and you are doomed indeed to failure. For it isn't defeat that makes you fail: it is your own refusal to see in defeat the guide and encouragement to success.

Defeats are nothing to be ashamed of. They are routine incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it without humiliation, analyze it and learn why you failed. Defeat, in other words, can help to cure its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success, but nothing can arouse within us such a compelling desire to succeed. If you let a baby grasp a rod and try to pull it away, he will cling more and more tightly until his whole weight is suspended. It is this same reaction, which should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you exploit the power that defeat gives, you can accomplish with it far more than you are capable of.

  36. Which of the following can best summarize the meaning of the passage?

  D) the baby will make more effort and do his best despite difficulty

  A) because it makes you fail

  B) because it forces you to face it without humiliation

  C) in that it provides the guide and encouragement to success

  D) because of your own refusal to see in it the guide and encouragement to success

  40. What does the author advise one to do with the power which defeat gives?

Getting modest amounts of exercise, even just an easy half-hour walk a day, appears tosubstantially improve women's chances of surviving breast cancer. Staying active has long been thought to 71 the risk of getting cancer, but a new report says it may also be an important prescription for recovery. The study, 72 on Monday, found that women who exercised 73 getting breast cancer 74 their chance of dying from the disease 75 one-quarter to one-half, depending on how active they were.

Just how exercise might do this is still 76 , 77 experts have several theories. Whatever the biological explanation, the researchers say 78 exercise is an undoubtedly safe 79 that can improve cancer survivors' health in many ways. Section B Passages

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).

  Passage One

If you are invited into an Englishman's home, there are some questions to consider. For instance, what time should you arrive? If it is a social occasion, not a business one, it is not polite to arrive early. Your hostess will be preparing for you, and will be most embarrassed if you arrive before she is quite ready. Ten minutes late is excellent. Half an hour is excessive, and requires apologies. Then too, the British are rather particular about table manners. The main thing is to sit up straight, copy everyone else, asking what to do if you are not sure, and keep conversation going. What time should you leave? There are no rules, but it is most impolite to stay too late, as it implies a lack of consideration for your hosts. If it is simply an invitation to an evening meal and conversation, you will probably take your leave between ten and eleven o'clock. If you have to stay for several days, you will conform as far as possible to the routine of the house, and your hostess will be very pleased if you give her a bunch of flowers, specially purchased, before you leave. If the invitation has been made purely to give you pleasure, a gift of money would be refused with some embarrassment.

Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard.

  11. If you are invited into an Englishman's home on a social occasion, which is the best time for you to arrive?

  12. Which of the following statements is incorrect?

  13. Which is the best present you can give the hostess before you leave?

  Passage Two

According to a recent poll, a large majority of Americans are in favor of retaining the present 55-mile-an-hour speed limit. This speed was imposed in 1973 when fuel shortages became crucial. Seventy-five percent of the persons surveyed think that the law is a good one. They point to the decrease in the highway death rate or to the saving of fuel as reasons for their opinion. Easterners and older people, rather than young adults, are more likely to argue for retention of the law.

Likewise, only 23 percent of the people surveyed favor a higher speed limit for trucks. The trucking industry contends that truck engines work more efficiently at higher speeds and that trucks travelling at higher speeds reach markets more quickly, thereby saving consumers money. Some of the persons polled argue that trucks on certain highways are already involved in a disproportionate number of fatal highway accidents.

Questions 14 to 16 are based on the passage you have just heard.

14.What was the principal reason for the speed limit?

15.Which of the following is less likely to favor retaining the 55-mile-an-hour speed limit?

16.Why do truckers want a higher speed limit for trucks?

  Passage Three

Now, we'll bring you a special news bulletin.

The three astronauts have splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean, a hundred and forty-five miles southwest of Hawaii, only six miles from the aircraft carrier that was dispatched for the recovery mission. The space module floated down on three parachutes and landed right-side-up in the water.

Mission Control in Houston confirmed that parachutes and landing systems had functioned properly. Mission Control has advised the astronauts to remain inside the module until they are lifted aboard the aircraft carrier.

An air force helicopter is already hovering above the module and seven divers are in the process of attaching lines to the spacecraft.

The astronauts have returned after fifteen days in space. Possibly one of the most important accomplishments of this mission was the extensive photographing of the Sun's surface.

After two days of physical examinations and observations, the astronauts will fly to Huston to reunite with their families.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have confirmation that the astronauts are now aboard the aircraft carrier. They seem to be in very good conditions and they prepare for the welcoming ceremonies.

Questions 17 to 20 are based on the passage you have just heard.

17.According to the reporter, where did the spacecraft splash down?

18.How many divers are in the process of attaching lines to the spacecraft?

19.How long had the astronauts been in space?

20.According to the reporter, where are the astronauts now?

  Part Ⅴ Writing

  Stress

As everyone knows, stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. As the pace of modern life continues to increase, we are always on the go from morning till night. And it is hard to slow down. Therefore, stress goes hand in hand with the life in a competitive society.

Different people, however, think of stress quite differently. Some believe that stress is not the bad thing that is often supposed to be. They are of the opinion that a certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and to give purpose to life. Others argue that stress contributes to one's mental decline and hence endangers health. According to them, relaxation, the opposite of stress, is essential for a healthy mind and body.

Personally, I'm in favor of the former view. I think it is impossible to avoid stress when one is entirely devoted to the career one pursues. In my opinion, it is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.
