My family was by no means well-to-do when I was born, and many decades had passed before my father felt he was standing on firm ground. I remember my parents had to struggle with heavy financial problems that overshadowed my entire youth.

For a long time I did know what I wanted to be. I began by studying medicine, switched over to geology and finished up with economics. No fairies placed in my cradle the prophecy that I would one day become president of a famous bank. That would not have been possible in any case, for there was no such thing as a cradle in my home.

One day in 1895, I discussed with my parents and my brother Eddie what career I should take up. My mother would have liked to see me go in for theology, but I had little inclination for the subject. My father, unlike many fathers, did not attempt to interfere with my plans for the future. Later, too, when I frequently changed from one faculty to another and tackle subjects that seemed to be poles apart, he invariably displayed great understanding and let me go my own way.

The Internet has created great changes in language learning. As English is the main language of science and technology, worldwide communications on the Internet are mainly conducted in the English language. In fact, the general dominance of the English language on the Internet has worked to further encourage the learning and use of English, especially among those whose native language is not English.

Using the Internet for English teaching is very new. However, as a resource in the hands of a skilled teacher, the Internet can provide a wealth of materials with which the skilled teacher can build encouraging and productive activities.

For example, Internet resources can be used for class follow-up, discussing homework and giving writing assignments. The teacher can find and bring back some useful materials from the Net, and can even grade students' papers at home by just connecting to the Internet and grading students' e-mail messages.

Through booking electronic magazines, taking part in electronic discussion and attending conference on the Internet, the teacher can share views and ideas with far-off colleagues quickly, easily and inexpensively. This is especially attractive and helpful for those in separated geographical areas.

Last week, we did research into how laid-off workers get their new jobs. We had a discussion in three groups and then began our research separately.

Group One surfed on the Internet and learned that most of the laid-off workers had already got their new jobs. In the vocational training center, the students in Group Two were told that there were five training courses for laid-off workers. After training, they began working as repairmen, cooks, typists, household workers and salespersons. The other students interviewed some laid-off workers who had got new jobs. A woman said, "With the help of the city government, I've found a new job."

What a great deal we've learned through the research!
