Expressing good wishes (表示祝愿)

  I. Extremely short dialogues(超短对话)

  1. -I'm going on a trip to Beijing, Xiao Mei. Why not go with me?

-Pity we can't go together. But enjoy your trip (have a good / pleasant trip), Liu Hong!

  2. -All the best in your new job!

-Thanks. Do come to my house when you're free.

  3. -Please give my best regards / wishes to your family.

  -Thank you. I won't forget it.

  4. -I wish you good luck in the coming monthly examination.

  5. -Mr. Smith, happy birthday and many happy returns!

-Thank you. It's good of you to come.

  6. -National Day is drawing near. Please send my greetings to your brother.

  -Sure I will.

  7. -I'd like to wish you every success with your study in the new term.

  11. -I hope everything goes well with you in the new school.

-It's very nice / kind of you to say so, Mary.

  12. -Good health, good luck and much happiness throughout the year.

-Thank you very much and I wish you the same!

  13. -Mr. Black sends you and Mrs. Smith his best regards.

-Thank you. Give him our best regards, too.

  II. Cultural information(文化背景)

In China, old age is honored(年老受人尊重). When an old person has his / her birthday, people often wish him / her a long life. But in Western countries, people, especially women, are more likely to dislike being asked about their age. They consider age a privacy. When they have birthdays, people often say "Happy birthday (to you)", "Many happy returns of the day." You can also praise that they are very young, saying "You look very healthy", "You don't look your age",etc.
