Trading Places

A great exchange is taking place between Chinese and foreign students

Mention "China" and "study abroad" in the same sentence a decade ago, and the most likely images to come to mind were the throngs of Chinese students filling science and engineering departments in the United States, where scholarships were relatively easy to come by.

  Much has changed.

First, the numbers of foreign students coming to China are clearly on the upswing: A stroll around campus at many Chinese universities is likely to turn up plenty more foreign faces than it did even just a year or two ago.

On the other hand, Chinese are getting more - and more diverse - opportunities to study abroad. Though numbers of Chinese students in traditional destinations, like the United States, are dropping, other countries have opened their doors and increased the choices for Chinese students looking to earn a foreign degree.

Turn the page for a look at how each group is making the most of their experiences overseas.
