Choosing the school that is right for you and your family is an important decision, and we are happy that you are considering Shanghai American School (SAS)! We look forward to receiving your completed application and getting to know your family through our admission process。
We have put together a comprehensive checklist of admission and government-required* documents to keep you and your family organized throughout the admission process。 Please see the SAS Admission Checklist under ‘Admission Guide’ on the right to get you started。
If you have any questions or need assistance with the application, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Admission at any time。
Application Process
When should I apply?
Shanghai American School (SAS) has a rolling admission process, so there is no deadline。 However, parents are encouraged to start the application process as soon as possible:
In September for the following school year beginning in AugustIn April for the second semester of the school year beginning in JanuaryPlease note that Admission decisions may not be available until all required documentation has been submitted。
How does the application process work?
Once a family has submitted an online application, an SAS Admission Officer will help them through the remainder of the admission process。 Applications are reviewed by the Admission Committee after all of the required documents are received, the applicant has been interviewed by one of our Admission team members, and an English proficiency test has been conducted (where applicable)。 We will conduct Skype interviews for overseas applicants on an as needed basis。
Students are offered placement if they have met Admission requirements and seats are available。 An application is valid for the applying school year (August – June) only。 Applicants interested in the next school year will be asked to reapply。
When can I expect a decision?
Admission decisions are communicated as early as possible; however, at times availability of seats is contingent upon withdrawal of current students。 A decision can be made more quickly once all documentation is received。
How can I place my child on your wait list?
SAS does not have a wait list but instead maintains a wait pool for qualified students。 A student can be placed in the wait pool only after his/her application has been reviewed and recommended by the Admission Committee。 When seats become available, priority consideration (not automatic placement) is given to returning students, overseas applicants, US passport holders, those with siblings currently attending SAS, and those with stronger academic English proficiency。 The wait pool is maintained for the applying school year (August – June) only。 Applicants interested in the next school year will be asked to reapply。
Is testing necessary for my child to attend your school?
The SSAT or NWEA MAP assessments are preferred for students applying to Grades 6 – 12。 Families are also encouraged to submit any other standardized test scores taken at their child’s present school。 Additional testing at all grade levels will be decided at the discretion of the Admission Committee。 The SSAT test must have been completed within the last year and any standardized tests such as the NWEA MAP, IOWA, Stanford, CTP4, and SAT done within the last 6 months。
Please take a look at our admission criteria for more information。
May we complete applications for the Pudong and Puxi campuses at the same time?
Families should apply to their campus of preference。 However, they may express interest in placement at either campus to their Admission Officer。

Admission Criteria
Admission decisions at Shanghai American School (SAS) are based on a review of each candidate‘s English language proficiency, demonstrated academic achievement, and developmental, social, and behavioral background。
Parents should note that amongst equally qualified candidates, priority consideration (not automatic placement) is given to returning students, overseas applicants, U.S。 passport holders, those with siblings currently attending SAS, and those with stronger academic English proficiency。 Admission decisions also take into account the balance of English language learners and other relevant demographic factors in order for SAS to realize its mission and support its core values。
Admission Assessments
The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) and NWEA MAP are the preferred admission tests at SAS for applicants entering Grades 6-12。 For Grades 3-5, all standardized test results from the child’s current school should be submitted – preferably the NWEA MAP assessment, if available。 For information on preparation materials and how to register for the SSAT please visit their website at www.ssat.org。 Scores should be reported directly to Shanghai American School using our SSAT school code: 7315。 The SSAT test must have been completed within the last year, and any other standardized tests such as the NWEA MAP, IOWA, Stanford, CTP4, SAT within the last six months。
Additional Evaluations
Where possible, interviews with applicants will be held。 In addition, English as an Additional Language (EAL) testing for nonnative speakers may be conducted to determine if English language support is required。 Limited spaces are available for such support。 The table below outlines the age group requirements for the SSAT and other evaluation methods。
