　　At the bottom of the world lies a mighty continent still wrapped in the Ice Ag e and, until recent times, unknown to man. Thus, more than a million persons  17  within 2,000 miles of the North Pole in an area that  18  most of Alaska, Siberia, and Scandinavia - a region  19  in forest and mining industries. Except for a handful of weather, within the same  20  of the South Pole there is not a single tree, industry, or settlement.
