On Safari

Hunters trade in their guns for cameras as safaris adapt to a modern and eco-friendly world

The hunters follow the trail through deep brush, moving quietly to avoid
giving themselves away
. Finally, in a clearingthey spot their prey–a lion lies in the sun, unaware of the approaching danger. The hunters slowly take aim and–click.

Safari used to mean coming home with lion skins and elephant tusks, but modern photo-safaris result mostly in great snapshots and stories: an outcome which satisfies both the hunter and prey.

A change is taking place in animal tourism. It began when people began to speak up for the environment, but it really hit home when it started making financial sense. In Brazil, cattle ranchers used to nearly kill off the jaguar because it would kill their cows. As the profits from cattle dropped, though, the ranchers realized they could make more money through jaguar-themed tourism.

Today tourists have many options on how they can get close to wildlife. Hot air balloon safaris offer high-flying adventures that are unlikely to disturb the native animals. Other safaris are pairing education with animal watching, giving travelers a taste of local cultures.

The Earthwatch Institute, an environmental organization, runs hands-on programs, teaming tourists with research scientists studying animals and the environment. Unlike most safari-goers who only get to look at the animals, Earthwatch gives travelers the chance to get up close and personal as they catch and tag wild zebras for research.

But while Earthwatchers are“camping under the stars, with bucket baths and pit toilets,”not everybody wants to rough it. Many safari groups offer luxurious hotels with personal chefs. The key, however, is making sure your tour supports the local economy.“Does the tour employ local people,”asks Julian Matthews, founder of Discovery Initiatives.“Does it buy local food? Does it help fund schools? If not, find a tour that does.”
