Karen is Shaun’s boss at a busy restaurant. Karen is unhappy with Shaun’s unsanitary working habits and is very close to letting him go. Listen as she reprimands him and gives him an ultimatum.

Shaun: Hi Karen, what did you want to see me about?

Karen: How would evaluate your performance here, Shaun?

Shaun: Well, let’s see. I think that the food I make is really good. And I think I work well with people. I’m on time everyday, and I’m a conscientious worker.

  Karen: Anything else?

Shaun: I think, overall, I run a tight ship. Is there something wrong? There haven’t been any complaints, have there?

Karen: I’ll be honest with you. There’s a problem with your working habits and I wanted to hear your perspective on things before I decide how to proceed.

Shaun: Well, if you don’t mind, could you tell me what the problem is?

Karen: I don’t think you keep the kitchen clean enough and I’m very worried that this could cause our customers to get sick.

Shaun: But, it’s so busy here! I try to keep it clean, but I can’t keep customers waiting!

Karen: You’re right. This is a busy restaurant, but if customers start getting sick, it won’t be busy for long. You need to be more efficient and clean as you work.

Shaun: How can I do that and still work quickly?

Karen: To start, make sure everything is spotless before you leave at night. During the day, don’t put off cleaning things until later because you’ll forget. Then, between orders, everything has to go back in the refrigerator. You can’t leave anything out because it will spoil.

Shaun: I can do it, but it’s going to slow things down a lot.

Karen: I don’t think so. You just have to work more efficiently, and I want to see improvement starting tomorrow.

  Shaun: Or…?

  Karen: Or, consider yourself free.

  Shaun: Free?

  Karen: To find another job.
