Mom looked as pleased as punch when she got your letter!

You're looking as pleased as Punch this morning.

To do your duty is not enough. You must go the extra mile.

For example: a high school student wants his teacher to write a good recommendation letter for him. His mother suggests that he should participate more in class activities and ask the teacher questions after class.

Student: "But mom, I turn in my homework always on time. I am a good student".

Mom: "To do your duty is not enough. You must go the extra mile. There are so many students in the class and only by constantly communicating with your teacher will you stand out."

I prefer the red one to the black one.

  prefer。..to。..

  eg:I prefer fishing to swimming.

Can you give me a wake-up call?

What time am I supposed to check in?

I am supposed to check in what time(when)。

I suppose you are right.

Bob has always had a crush on Lucy.

Had a crush on sb.

Hold on a minute. I 'll call him.

  hold on:

1.(informal) used to tell sb to wait or stop

例句:Hold on a minute while I get my breath back.

2.to survive in a difficult or dangerous situation:

They managed to hold on until help arrived.

3.(informal) used on the telephone to ask sb to wait until they can talk to the person they want:

例句:Can you hold on? I’ll see if he’s here.

Hold on a minute. I 'll call him.
