1. be familiar with, be familiar to

　　be familiar with意为"对……熟悉"(have a good knowledge of...),主语通常是表示"人"的名词或代词,介词with的宾语可以是表示"人"的名词或代词,也可以是表示"物"的名词或代词。例如:

　　Every Englishman is familiar with the Bible.每个英国人对《圣经》都很熟悉。

　　I am familiar with the city. 我对这个城市很熟悉。

　　These are the poems that every student is familiar with.这些诗每个学生都很了解。

　　be familiar to意为"为……所熟知"(be well-known to...), 主语通常是表示"物"的名词。例如:

　　English is familiar to him. 他精通英语。

　　2. start,start with

　　start意为"开始",可用作及物动词或不及物动词.用作及物动词时,其后跟名词、代词,也可跟动词不定式或V-ing形式。例如:

　　Classes started in May. 五月份开始上课。

　　start with可与 begin with 换用,意为"从……开始"、"先从某事做起",后边接名词。例如:

　　Knowledge starts / begins with practice.认识从实践开始。

　　另外,动词不定式结构to start with(to begin with)可作插入语或状语,意思为"首先"。例如:

　　Our group had five members to start with. 刚开始我们小组有五个人。

　　To start with, the computer room must be kept very clean. 首先计算机工作室必须保持清洁。

　　3. eager,anxious

　　两者都可以译作"急于"。例如:

　　He is anxious / eager to know it.他急于知道这件事。

　　anxious表示"焦急"时,有"担心"、"着急"的意思;eager表示"快些"、"很想",强调一种进取的心情。 试比较:

　　I am eager about my progress. 我很渴望进步。

　　He is anxious for his health. 他为自己的健康担心。

　　但是, anxious也有"渴望" 的意思.anxious可以表示eager的意思,而eager一般不表示"焦急"、"担心"。这两个词后均可跟 for或about,也可接不定式或that从句;在从句中应用虚拟语气。例如:

　　We are anxious that he (should) do his bit.我们极力希望他能尽到自己的本分。

　　We are eager that he(should)come. 我们急切地盼望他来。

　　4. strength, power, force, energy

　　这几个词都有"力"的意思, 但是"力"的性质和来源不同。

　　strength指"体力"、"力量"、"强度"。例如:

　　I have hardly enough strength left to move my feet. 我连移动两脚的力量都没有了。

　　He is a man of great strength. 他是一个力气很大的人。

　　force"力量",着重指"力"产生的实质效果,其复数常指"兵力、军队"。例如:

　　The law remains in force.法律仍旧有效。

　　the forces of a country一国的军队

　　power"能力"、"权力", 着重行动所根据的能力(本领)或职权。例如:

　　I shall do everything in my power to help you. 我要尽我的所能帮助你。

　　energy依照其物理学定义讲,是"能、能量";另外energy也指生理上的"精力"。例如:

　　Heat is a form of energy.热是一种能的形式。

　　Though he is very thin, he is full of

　　energy. 他虽然瘦小,但精力充沛。

　　5. story, tale

　　这两个名词都可作"故事"解,story是普通用语,可以指口头的或书面的,真实的或虚构的故事。story还可表示人的"事迹"、"经历"等。例如:

　　This is a story from real life. 这是一篇取自真实生活的故事。

　　tale 大致与story 相近,但它所叙述的多是幻想或传说的故事,常译作"传说"、"神话"。注意:tale 一般不指较短的"故事"。例如:

　　Only children will believe such fairy tales. 只有孩子们才会相信这种离奇的故事。

　　Do you like to hear tales of adventures?你喜欢听历险的故事吗?

　　6. keep silent, keep silence

　　keep silent "(对某事) 保持缄默",即对某事保守秘密或不将某事说出来。例如:

　　It is bad manners to keep silent when the teacher asks you questions. 当老师问你问题时,缄默不答是不礼貌的。

　　It's none of your business. You must keep silent about it. 此事与你无关,你必须保持缄默。

　　keep silence 保持安静,保持沉默(即不说话)。例如:

　　It's time for class. Keep silence, please.上课了,请保持安静!

　　Out of consideration for him I kept

　　silence; you must keep silence. 出于对他的考虑,我保持沉默,你应该严守沉默。

　　7. be in love with, fall in love with

　　be in love with "与……在恋爱",后多跟人,指状态,后可与一段时间连用。例如:

　　He has been in love with her for three years. 他们恋爱三年了。

　　fall in love with "爱上……" ,指动作,一般不与一段时间连用。例如:

　　I fell in love with her at first sight. 我对她一见钟情。

　　Tom fell in love with Mary.汤姆与玛丽产生了爱情。

　　8. in peace, at peace

　　in peace "安详地(的)"、"安静的(地)"、"平安的(地)" ,既可用作副词,也可用作形容词。作副词用时修饰动词,作状语。例如:

　　He is sleeping in peace.他安详地睡着了。

　　When he retired, he went to his native country and lived in peace. 退休后,他回到家乡过着安静的生活。

　　at peace "处于和平状态,和平相处; 处于平静状态,安静;长眠,死",此短语既可作形容词,也可作副词。例如:

　　The two nations are now at peace. 两国现在和平相处。

　　All was at peace in the dead of the night. 深夜里万籁俱寂。

　　9. be pleased to; be pleased with; be pleased at

　　be pleased to后接动词原形,表示"很高兴……"。例如:

　　I'm pleased to see you. 见到你(我)真高兴。

　　be pleased with后常跟人或物,表示"对……感到满意"。例如:

　　We are pleased with our new house.我们对新居很满意。

　　be pleased at后跟动名词或事情,表示"很高兴"。例如:

　　I'm pleased at your arrival. 你们的到来我很高兴。
