Multicultural Country
Canadians are a collection of diverse national and cultural groups. About one-half of Canadians are from Britain or French ancestry. Native Indians and Inuit still live in the country. Other nationalities include other European, Asia and Latin American. The mix of ethnic groups differs from province to province.
About 60 percent of people identify English as their first language, while 24 percent claim French. Some 11 percent of Canadians reported a different first language.
Both official languages, English and French, use the same spelling of the name Canada. The word Canada is a derivation of the Huron-Iroquois Kanata. This means village or settlement. Canada is a founding member of the United Nations.
