Gerald is an executive at a big insurance company. He meets his wife, Miriam, for dinner after a frustrating day at the office.
Miriam: Uh-oh. Don’t tell me your staff are pilfering1 pencils again.
Gerald: It’s not that. It’s Rhonda, the vice president of underwriting.
Miriam: Are you two still not seeing eye to eye on things?
Gerald: Today she waltzedsintosmy office, dumped her problemssintosmy lap, and left. I hired her to solve problems, not stick me with them.
Miriam: Did she actually ask you to solve them for her?
Gerald: No, but why else would she act like that?
Miriam: Gerald, Rhonda knows she’s responsible for finding solutions. But talking about a problem probably helps her work through it.
Gerald: Why does she always need a second opinion? Every time she has to make a decision, I see her discussing it with her staff.
Miriam: She wants their input.2 If her staff feel that they’ve contributed to a decision, then they’re more likely to support it.
Gerald: I make my decisions on my own. If I really need to consult someone, I do it discreetly.3
Miriam: Look, Gerald, men and women simply communicate in different ways. It’s been like that since time immemorial.
Gerald: But I thought we could at least be on the same wavelength4 as far as business was concerned. Silly me.
