Definition定义:
n. 1. A moral or legal duty道义或法律上的义务,通常是按照契约或者承诺、道德责任去行事或应该做的事情。
2. a sense of being in debt because of a service or favor因接受服务或恩惠而感到的一份人情债。
Examples例:
1. He has the obligations to stay with his wife.他有义务跟妻子在一起。
2. I don't want him to marry me out of obligation.我不想让他为了尽义务而跟我结婚。
常用例子:under an obligation to help有义务帮忙,have obligations to sb.对某人有某种义务

obligation和duty都有"义务"、"职责"、"责任"的意思,但obligation往往表示"特指的、带有约束力的、强制的义务",专门的用语如"即时义务"(immediate obligation),或"立即履行的义务"(the obligation of immediate implementation)都是这个意思。又如:
He is under the obligation of supporting his aged mother.他有义务赡养年迈的母亲。
Every citizen has the obligation to perform military service.每个公民都有服兵役的义务。
而duty多指"道义上的责任"、"本分",比较强调自觉性,如:
Inevitably, there is strong social condemnation of those who neglect this duty.显然社会对这种责任的行为是人人喊打的。
to be torn between duty and self-interest.在责任和个人利益之间进退维谷
