　　obligation

　　Definition定义：

　　n. 1. A moral or legal duty道义或法律上的义务，通常是按照契约或者承诺、道德责任去行事或应该做的事情。

　　2. a sense of being in debt because of a service or favor因接受服务或恩惠而感到的一份人情债。

　　Examples例：

　　1. He has the obligations to stay with his wife.他有义务跟妻子在一起。

　　2. I don't want him to marry me out of obligation.我不想让他为了尽义务而跟我结婚。

　　常用例子：under an obligation to help有义务帮忙，have obligations to sb.对某人有某种义务

　　obligation和duty都有"义务"、"职责"、"责任"的意思，但obligation往往表示"特指的、带有约束力的、强制的义务"，专门的用语如"即时义务"(immediate obligation)，或"立即履行的义务"(the obligation of immediate implementation)都是这个意思。又如：

　　He is under the obligation of supporting his aged mother.他有义务赡养年迈的母亲。

　　Every citizen has the obligation to perform military service.每个公民都有服兵役的义务。

　　而duty多指"道义上的责任"、"本分"，比较强调自觉性，如：

　　Inevitably, there is strong social condemnation of those who neglect this duty.显然社会对这种责任的行为是人人喊打的。

　　to be torn between duty and self-interest.在责任和个人利益之间进退维谷
