　　We are like the young man who sold the old family farm, because he could see no future in owning it, and wandered the world seeking his fortune. Years later he returned, old and poor, for a last look at the old place and found that the new owner had discovered oil!

　　机会似乎从来不会在我们最需要它时出现。(Opportunity never seems to beswhereswe want it to be at the time)它总是在别的什么地方"出现"。(It always“appears”to be somewhere else)

　　看到opportunity很自然就会想到chance，它们都可以表示“机会”，但chance还有“某件事发生的可能性”的意思，比如：

　　There's a chance that I'll see him.

　　我大概能见到他。

　　然而，(Yet)事实是十之八九机会刚好就在你家的后院。(the truth is that nine out of ten times opportunity is right in your own backyard)

　　nine out of ten times=nine times out of ten，意思都是almost always，有时times还可以去掉，比如：

　　Nine out of ten people agreed with me.有十分之九的人同意我的意见。(而不是说在场的十个人中九个人同一我的意见。)

　　要表达“十之八九”“几乎全部”的意思，还有其他说法，比如Ten to one和ninety-nine out of a hundred都可以。来看两个例子：

　　He talks about you ten to one when we have a chitchat.

　　每次我们闲聊他几乎都谈及你。

　　Ninety–nine out of a hundred，his comments are not to the point.

　　他的评论几乎全部都是未击中要害的。

　　我们像那个把老家农场卖掉的年轻人，(We are like the young man who sold the old family farm)因为看不到拥有农场有什么前途，(because he could see no future in owning it)他便去闯荡世界寻找发财机会。(and wandered the world seeking his fortune)

　　多年后他回来了，(Years later he returned)又老又穷，(old and poor)想最后看看自己的老家，(for a last look at the old place)却发现新的主人在那儿发现了石油！(and found that the new owner had discovered oil)

　　今天的语法小教室，我们来讲一个副词else。

　　else常用在疑问代词(who/what/why etc.)不定代词(anything/someone/anywhere etc.)后面，表示“其他、另外”，比如：

　　I've said I'm sorry. What else can I do?

　　我已经说对不起了，还能做什么？

　　Do you want anything else to eat?

　　你想再吃点什么吗？
