Conversation A Doug and Susan are Americans. They are talking in the university library. Doug:Say, how’s your World Culture class going? Susan:Really well. We’re learning about body gestures1 around the world. Doug:I traveled to Japan last summer. Did you learn about eye contact2 in Asia? Susan:Yes! In Japan, unlike America, it’s rude3 to make direct eye contact during conversation. Doug:Right. When I was in Japan, I had to pretend4 I was shy, so people wouldn’t get angry at me! Conversation B Susan:Here’s something else: The Japanese sometimes close their eyes and nod while you’re talking to them. Doug:That happened to me! I thought the guy was falling asleep in front of me! Susan:Actually,5 it meant he was thinking about what you were saying. Doug:Really? Well, next time I fall asleep in class, I’ll just tell the teacher I’m listening-- Japanese style! |
