1. To make as much use of the land as possible, two or more crops are planted each year where possible. 为了充分利用土地，在有条件的地方，每年种植两季以上的庄稼。

　　【问】句首的To make短语作什么成分？怎么理解句尾的where possible?

　　【答】To make短语是动词不定式短语，置于句首作状语，表示强调或突出某种"目的"；有时动词不定式置于后半句，间或以in order to do sth.或 so as to do sth. 来表达。如：

　　To make a study of the kangaroo, he came to Australia. 为了研究袋鼠，他来到了澳洲。

　　He will go to the clinic tomorrow in order to be examined by the doctor. 他明天去诊所让大夫检查。

　　where possible实际上是地点状语从句的简写；如果写全的话，则是：where it is possible for two or more crops to be planted each year。这种情况还常见于if necessary/possible等结构中。如：

　　Fill in the blanks with proper articles if necessary. 如有必要，用适当的冠词填空。

　　You'd better drive over to pick me up, if possible. 如可能的话，你最好开车过来接我。

　　2. Future agriculture should depend on high technology as well as traditional methods. 未来的农业不仅要依靠传统的方法，还要依靠高科技。

　　【问】句中的as well as可以换用but also吗？

　　【答】不可以。as well as在这里用作连词，表"也；不但"，但它跟not only...but also用法不一样。as well as 用来强调"前者"，后者只起陪衬作用。所以：A as well as B, 当理解为"不但B而且A"，等于not only B but also A。 故上述句子如改用not only...but also, 则成：...depend not only on traditional methods but also on high technology.。

　　如果A as well as B短语用作主语的话，则后面的谓语的单复数当与A保持一致。如：

　　Liu Fang as well as

　　her parents was invited to the party. 不但刘芳的父母亲，而且刘芳本人也被邀请去参加晚会。

　　3. Using the latest technologies, Chinese scientists grow vegetables in greenhouses. 利用最新的技术，中国科学家在温室里种蔬菜。

　　【问】句首的Use为何写成其V-ing形式？它在句中起什么作用？

　　【答】 Using短语在这里是现在分词作状语，表伴随说明。在英语里，把现在分词置于句首或句中，以此来说明"原因、时间、条件、让步、方式或伴随情况"的，经常见到。如：

　　Going downtown I met a friend of mine. 我到市区时遇到我的一个朋友。

　　Being sick, I stayed at home. 我因病待在家中。

　　The child fell, striking his head

　　against the door. 那孩子跌倒了，头碰在门上。

　　He sat in the armchair, reading a newspaper. 他坐在扶手椅上读报。

　　4. In other words, the way tomatoes grow from a natural seed is changed. 换句话说，西红柿由自然的种子成长的方式被改变了。

　　【问】the way与其后面的tomatoes grow...这个句子到底是个什么关系？

　　【答】way在这里表" 方式、方法、手段"；way的后面可以跟定语从句，常以in which, that或引导，有时可省略，本句就是省略了关系词。如：

　　The way(in which/ that) you dealt with the matter is considered to be reasonable. 你处理此事的方法被认为是合理的。

　　I don't like the way you do up your hair. 我不喜欢你梳头发的样式。

　　5. The tomato is one of nearly 4,500 different plants that are genetically modified. 这种西红柿是通过遗传基因改变的，将近4，500种不同植物的一种。

　　【问】one of...后面跟的定语从句，其谓语什么时候用单数，什么时候用复数？

　　【答】本句中that引导的定语从句所修饰的是plants, 所以其谓语当用复数；但如果主句里出现了the only one of...,则定语从句的谓语当用单数，因为定语从句所修饰的是前面的the only one。请比较：

　　Li Ming is one of my close friends that have helped me out. 李明是帮我摆脱困境的知心朋友之一。

　　Li Ming is the only one of my close friends that has helped me out. 李明是惟一帮我摆脱困境的知心朋友。
