  (A)

Whether you eat to live or live to eat, food should help keep you well. In our modern world of processed(加工) and preserved foods, many nutritionists are suggesting that we can stay healthy with a well-balanced diet of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and not too much meat, salt or sugar. In fact, eating natural, unprocessed foods that are made from scratch, instead of artificial and junk foods, may not only keep you healthy, but save your money, too.

To stay healthy, you must also be careful to avoid food poisoning, a common, unpleasant, and often dangerous illness that affects one out of every six Americans each year. Food poisoning is often caused by salmonella bacteria(沙门氏菌) in food, especially raw meats and dairy products. Heat usually kills the bacteria, and refrigeration(冷冻) keeps them from growing. So remember to keep hot food hot and cold food cold. Also, be sure to keep your hands and cooking utensils(烹饪用具) clean so you don't transfer germs to the food while you are preparing it.

If you use canned food, always check the cans for leaks or puffiness(膨胀). A puffed can could mean botulism(肉毒中毒), a fatal type of food poisoning that you cannot see or smell. Never taste any food that you suspect has gone bad. Instead, return any damaged cans or spoiled food to the grocery store, and the manager will refund(偿付) your money. When using processed foods, be sure to read all the labels and check the ingredients and the freshness date before you buy or eat the food.

Eating is one of the joys of life. Being careful about what you put in your mouth can keep it that way.

  1. According to most nutritionists, a diet of ________is good for you.

  D. heat cold food before eating

  3. If a can is puffy, it is suggested in the passage to ________.

  B. throw it away to avoid poisoning other foods

  C. heat it so as to kill the bacteria

  D. return it to its seller for repayment

  4. What does "it" in the last paragraph refer to?

  A. Life. B. Joy. C. Eating. D. Food.

  5. On the whole, the passage strongly suggests that ________.

  A. natural food is healthier than artificial food

  B. food helps keep one healthy

  C. canned food may be poisoning

  D. one's poor health is a result of food poisoning

  (B)

In the earliest times, men considered lightning to be one of the great mysteries of nature. Some ancient people believed that lightning and thunder were the weapons of the gods.

In reality, lightning is a flow of electricity formed high above the earth. A single flash of lightning 1.6 kilometers long has enough electricity to light one million light bulbs(电灯泡).

The American scientist and statesman, Benjamin Franklin, was the first to show the connection between electricity and lightning in 1752. In the same year he also built the first lightning rod(避雷针). This device protects buildings from damage by lightning.

Modern science has discovered that one stroke of lightning contains more than 15 million volts. A spark between a cloud and the earth may be as long as 13 kilometers, and travel at a speed of 30 million meters per second.

Scientists estimate that there are about 2,000 million flashes of lightning per year. Lightning hits the Empire State Building in New York City 30 to 48 times a year. In the United States it kills an average of one person every day.

The safest place to be in case of an electrical storm is in a closed car. Outside, one should go to low ground and not get under trees. Also, one should stay out of water and away from metal fences. Inside a house, people should avoid open doorways and windows and not touch wires or metal things.

With lightning, it is better to be safe than sorry!

  6. In fact, lightning is________.

  B)阅读理解(10分)

  阅读下面短文,然后根据文意选择正确答案或完成句子。

  B. throw it away to avoid poisoning other foods

  C. heat it so as to kill the bacteria

  D. return it to its seller for repayment

  4. What does "it" in the last paragraph refer to?

  A. Life. B. Joy. C. Eating. D. Food.

  A. natural food is healthier than artificial food

  D. one's poor health is a result of food poisoning

  8. One flash of lightning 1.6 kilometers long can produce enough electricity for ________ light bulbs.

IV. Many centuries ago, all people lived on seeds and plants. They did not know how to farm or raise animals for food. Because they used stone tools, we call them the Stone Age People. There are people who still live much like the Stone Age People. They live in places that are hard to reach. Since they have met few outsiders, they don't know about modern inventions, they have not learned ways of doing things from others. For 25,000 years, such groups of people have lived alone in the middle of Australia. One of the groups is the Kooris. They do not know how to farm, nor do they raise animals. Kooris spend most of their time searching for food and water. The men hunt animals with stone-tipped spears. The women and children look for roots, seeds and nuts. Several Kooris families live together as a group. They have no houses. At night, they sleep around fires.

  Believe Yourself

In our study and work, or in a close game, we need a kind of moral support, that is self-confidence. I'm quite sure the people who have no self-confidence cannot get

  success.

In fact, every person has his strong and weak points. The people who cannot find their strong points easily lose courage of going on with their research, and the people who cannot find their weak points easily become proud. The right position is that you should find both strong points and weak points. Your strong points encourage you to try your best, and your weak points warn you not to be proud.

When you know how to build up your self-confidence, you have halfway there. On the other hand, the man who really has self-confidence must have enough knowledge to deal with all kinds of difficulties which may be met in his study and work, otherwise more failure awaits him.
