英语中有一些短语,有无定冠词"the"将影响短语的意义。有些短语加"the"后表达原短语的被动意义,有些则"面目全非"。现将部分这样的重点短语总结一下,供大家参考。

　　一、加"the"后表达被动意义

　　1. in possession of 拥有

　　in the possession of 被……拥有

　　①My brother is in possession of all the business. 我哥哥拥有所有的生意。

　　②All the business is in the possession of my brother. 所有的生意由我哥哥拥有。

　　2. in control of 控制;管理

　　in the control of 受……控制

　　①Jim is in control of the store. 吉姆管理这家商店。

　　②The store was in the control of Jim. 这家商店由吉姆管理。

　　3. in charge of 负责;管理

　　in the charge of 由……来照料

　　①The nurse was left in charge of the children. 护士被留下来照顾孩子。

　　②The girl was in the charge of the nurse. 这个女孩由护士来照料。

　　二、加"the"后意义迥然不同

　　4. out of question 毫无疑问;肯定

　　out of the question 不可能

　　①Your success is out of question. 你肯定会成功。

　　②The boys had no money, so it was out of the question for them to go to the cinema. 孩子们没有钱,因此他们不可能去看电影。

　　5. in sight of 可以看见

　　in the sight of 由……看来

　　①We are in sight of the land. 我们看到陆地了。

　　②All men are equal in the sight of God. 在上帝眼里人人平等。

　　6. in red 穿红衣服

　　in the red 赤字

　　①She was dressed in red. 她穿着红衣服。

　　②The company had been in the red until he took over. 这家公司在他接手之前一直亏损。

　　7. by sea 经海路

　　by the sea 在海边

　　①He travelled to New York by sea. 他乘船去了纽约。

　　②I'll take her down by the sea. 我将把她带到海边去。

　　8. in prison 被监禁

　　in the prison 在监狱做事

　　①He was in prison for three years. 他已被监禁3年了。

　　②We worked in the prison. 我们在监狱做事。

　　9. in case of 如果;万一

　　in the case of 就……而言

　　①In case of fire, break the glass and push the red button. 如有火灾,请打碎玻璃按红色按钮。

　　②In the case of a physical change, no new substance is formed. 就物理变化而言,并不产生新物质。

　　10. in black 穿黑衣服

　　in the black 有盈余

　　①He was dressed in black. 他穿着黑衣服。

　　②The new production method put the factory in the black. 新生产方法使工厂有了盈余。

　　11. by day (在)白天

　　by the day 按日(计算)

　　①I prefer to travel by day rather than by night. 我喜欢白天旅行,而不喜欢夜间旅行。

　　②She is paid by the day. 她按日领工资。
