英语中的call on, call in at, drop in (on/at), visit, pay a visit (to), go to see 这几个短语均含有"拜访；看望"之意，但用起来却不一样。请看：

　　1. call on 后面接人作宾语，指"进行短暂的社会或公务关系的访问"，有时也可用call upon。例如：

　　(1) I called on him yesterday.昨天我去拜访了他。

　　(2) Please call on me next time you are in New York.下次到纽约时，请顺便来我家。

　　(3) After we moved into the new house, he came to call on us. 我们刚搬到新家，他就来看望我们。

　　2. call in at后面接地点，表示"到某处去拜访某人"。例如：

　　(1) Could you call in at her house? 你能顺便去她家吗？

　　(2) You'd better call in at his office. 你最好去办公室找他。

　　(3) We shall call in at Mr John's this evening. 今晚我们将去拜访约翰先生家。

　　3. drop in则表示"非正式地走访；顺便走访或偶然走访"，事先不打招呼。这里的in 为副词。如果后接拜访的"人"，在in后再用介词on；如果后面接处所名词，介词要用at。 例如：

　　(1) Would you drop in this evening? 今天晚上你顺便来一下好吗？

　　(2) I'll drop in on him tomorrow. 我明天去看望他。

　　(3) On the way to Jinzhou, I dropped in on several old school friends. 在去锦州的途中，我顺便拜访了几个老校友。

　　(4) On the way to Jinzhou, I dropped in at several　factories. 在去锦州的途中，我顺便访问了几家工厂。

　　4. visit是正式用语，接人或处所均可,它用来表示"进行较长时间的访问"。既可以指进行友好的社交性的访问，又可以指因职务关系而进行的访问。例如：

　　(1) When will you visit me again? 你什么时候再来看我？

　　(2) The doctor regularly visited her in the evening. 医生经常在晚上来看她。

　　(3) Are the foreign guests visiting in Dalian? 那些外国客人正在大连访问吗？

　　(4) She makes several business visits to Japan every year. (句中的visit为名词)她每年去日本做几次商业访问。

　　5. pay a visit(to) 意为"对……进行访问"、"去看望……"，后面接人或处所均可，其中的visit为名词，此短语与visit 同义，可变为：pay...a visit。例如：

　　(1)They will pay a visit to China from May 18 to 25. 他们会在5月18日到25日对中国进行访问。

　　(2) Have you paid a visit to the patient yet? 你去看望过那个病人吗？

　　6. go to see是一普通用语，尤指"亲人间的看望"。例如：

　　(1) I'll go to see my grandfather next week. 下周我要去看望爷爷。

　　(2) He seldom goes to see his uncle. 他很少去看他的叔叔。
