Take care about those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can make a false impression. For example, someone might say, "I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!"This guy is a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discovered that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He is really a big loser! He didn't say anything that was false, but he intentionally left out important information. That's called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Untrustworthy candidates (候选人) in political campaigns(竞选运动)often use this trick. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents (对手) runs an ad, saying, "During Governor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs!" That's true. However an honest statement would have been, "During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs."

Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might boast (吹嘘), "Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples(粉刺)". It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.

This kind of trick happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

  56. Which of he statements is true according to the article?

  A. All advertisements are lies.

  B. You can't trust anyone who tells the truth.

  C. The truth can be used in dishonest ways.

  D. Whenever people tell the truth, they are really lying.

  57. What does the underlined word "deceive" probably mean?

  A. tell. B. explain. C. fool. D. win.

  58. The writer suggests in this article that people should ________.

  A. believe in nobody

  B. vote for female candidates

  C. stay away from political campaigns

  D. think carefully about what they read and hear

  59. What is the best title for this article?

  A. Everyone Lies at Present B. Lying with the Truth

  C. Try to Be Honest to the People

  D. Don't Believe People Who Tell the Truth

  B

Karen Mok (Mo Wenwei) couldn't hold back her smile when her album, "X", was announced as having sold over 500,000 copies.

"I'm so happy that people like my new adventure", the 33-year-old Hong Kong-based singer said.

Mok called the album "X", meaning the Roman numeral 10, to mark her 10th anniversary in the music business, she said.

"X" has been a total surprise for Mok's fans. Unlike her past nine releases, "X" includes more than just love songs. Everything from heavy metal or rap to soul and blues gets a look in on it. "I never repeat myself and I never hesitate to try out new things," she said, a cheeky smile spreading across her face. "I feel that I was born to surprise. It's just part of my character."

He was just Colonel(上校) Yang; few people knew his name or recognized his face. But when he came back to the earth after a 21-hour trip to space, Yang Liwei's smile was seen across the world above the magic words: "China's first spaceman."

The 38-year-old astronaut was sent into space by China's Shenzhou V spacecraft, which orbited the earth 14 times. He landed safely the next day, making China the third country to successfully send a person into space, after the former Soviet Union and the US.

Yang was satisfied with his job. "I have seen many landing scenes before on video, and I think ours was one of the most successful," he said on a special plane to Beijing after landing.

Born into an ordinary family in Liaoning Province, he became a pilot in the Chinese Air Force in 1987, spending 1,350 hours in the air. He joined the Chinese space programme 11 years later.

While in space, Yang recorded everything he saw as well as showing China's national flag and the United Nations' flag to the people watching him on TV at home.

He has spent five years training to become a spaceman.

"I eat all of my meals at the space program's dinning-room and have never been able to take my son to kindergarten," he said. "I've never met his teachers."

But becoming China's first spaceman has made all the effort worthwhile.

"When I boarded the spacecraft for the first time, I couldn't help feeling excited," he said. "I decided that I had to fly it."

To Chinese people, Yang is now a hero. One visitor to a Xinhua news agency online forum said,"Yang's trip is a giant leap forward for China."

Officials say the next Shenzhou will be launched by 2005. China also plans to develop space walking and a space lab.

If you want to find out how hard the heart muscle is exercising, you must know your pulse rate and learn how to check your pulse. To take your pulse, turn your open right hand towards the ceiling. Lightly place the first three fingers of the left hand just above the heel (手掌根) of the right hand. Count off the beats on a watch for fifteen seconds, then multiply by four to give the rate per minute.

In general, the speed at which the heart beats depends on the oxygen content of the blood. If the oxygen level of the blood falls, the heart beats faster.

Therefore, if we exercise the large muscle groups in the main part of the body which use up a great deal of oxygen, this will raise the pulse rate. But how high should we raise the pulse and for how long? The answer to this question lies in your personal pulse rating. You find this by taking your age from 200, then taking a further amount of 40 for unfitness. So a lady of 38 years old would have a personal pulse rating of 122.

The aim is to keep in this pulse rate and no higher for a period of 10-minute continuous exercise. When you do one of the heart and lung exercises, you take your pulse rate every minute or so; if it is at, or below your personal pulse rating, then you continue; if above, you rest until the pulse comes down. In unfit people, this will mean lots of stopping and starting to begin with, but with practice the rest periods get shorter and shorter until you can go for the whole ten minutes without stopping.

  68. Which of the following is your correct pulse rate per minute?

  A. Four is added to the number of beat counted in 15 seconds.

  B. Forty times the number of beat counted in 15 seconds.

  C. Forty is added to the number of beat counted in 15 seconds.

  D. Four times the number of beat counted in 15 seconds.

  69. What happens if the oxygen level of the blood rises?

  A. The heart stops beating.

  B. The heart beats more slowly.

  C. The heart beats faster.

  D. None of the above.

  70. What kind of person must take an extra 40 when calculating his/her personal pulse rating?

  A. Somebody who is fit.

  B. A 38-year-old woman.

  C. Somebody who is unfit.

  D. A baby.

  71. How many minutes of continuous exercise should you try to do at your personal pulse rating?

  A. Fifteen seconds.B. Forty minutes. C. Ten minutes.

  D. Twenty minutes.

M: My watch says 6:50, so we have around 40 minutes left to get there.

  (Text 2)

M: I've been waiting for the phone to ring since 5 o'clock.

W: I don't think you should worry about John. He is not only a skilled driver, but also he knows the road very well.

  (Text 3)

M: I'd like to have that coat. But I haven't got enough money with me.

W: Why not use mine? I have plenty on me.

  (Text 4)

W: Would you mind opening that window? We need some fresh air here.

  M: I'm afraid it's the kind that doesn't open.

  (Text 5)

W: When I went to the bookstore, I asked about that book you mentioned "The New African Art", but I couldn't find it.

M: Oh, but the title is "African's New Heart". We have just been talking about "Africa's New Paints", so it is not surprising that you got the wrong title.

  第二节

  (Text 6)

M: Well, here we are. There's certainly plenty to choose from.

W: I'm finding it hard to know where to start. Would you like to look at the answering machines?

M: Let's start there. I like this one.

W: We have a lot to buy, Tom. We can't afford to pay $129 for an answering machine. And we can't afford to pay $127.50 for one, either.

M: Alright. We'll buy a cheaper one then. There's this one for $89 or the smaller one for $59.95.

W: I like the square shape of the smaller one. It'll fit neatly on my desk.

M: And it's the cheapest. Okay. We'll buy that one.

  (Text 7)

M: Did you have your television set repaired?

W: Yes, but not at the place you told me.

M: Why not? The repairmen are very good and the charges are quite reasonable.

W: That may be, but I couldn't find it.

M: But you couldn't miss it. I told you to turn right at the first crossing after the Railway Bridge.

W: I did as you said, but I went to the end of the road without finding the place.

M: Perhaps you should turn right at the second crossing. Yes, I think it is.

W: Sometimes when someone says you can't miss it, perhaps you can't find it.

  (Text 8)

W: Are you going somewhere for your vacation?

M: Yes, I'm making plans for a tour.

W: That'll be lovely. Where are you going?

M: I start out from Long Island this Friday. I've planned a four-day drive to Salt

Lake City, where I'll join my father for his fiftieth birthday.

W: Well, you have to prepare lots of food and enough sleeping bags then.

M: Oh, no. I'll spend the nights in hotels and enjoy local food as I pass by. How does it sound?

W: It sounds good, you can do a lot of sightseeing, too.

M: Yes, I'll take my time. And I'll go to Disneyland.

W: So, you're going to have a nice vacation.

  (Text 9)

M: How time flies! The summer holidays are coming next week.

W: Yes, do you have any plan?

M: Certainly. I want to go to Egypt. What about you?

W: I'm afraid I can't go anywhere. I failed my English written exam. You know my parents are so strict with me.

  M: Bad luck!

W: I say, is Egypt an Asian country? Is it far?

M: Yes, quite far. But it's not in Asia, it's an African country.

W: Oh, yes. I've heard of not only the Pyramids but the Aswan Dam. Do you want to see them?

M: Of course. I'll go there by boat on the Nile.

W: That'll be wonderful and interesting. How will you go to Egypt?

M: By air-by flight No.CA808! My sister works on it! And then I'll be treated as a king!

W: Don't be so proud. I'll be off now. I wish you a good trip.

This disease is caused when cattle eat the meal infected. It will cause cattle to die. Experts said the disease enters a country through imports of bone dust and meal from infected cattle. Since January 1, China has stopped the import of feed made with the animals from the European Union, where the first case of mad cow disease was reported.

Here we see two men of a similar type. They happen to be riding in the same street, along the same side but from opposite directions. Neither of them wants to give way to the other. Great minds think alike. Today their minds happen to run along the same line:"Anyway he wouldn't dare to run into me." In no time they'll crash into each other, fall to the ground and roll together into the same ditch. Hopefully from this incident, they will draw the same lesson: follow the traffic rules.
