  (A)

Why is setting goals important? Because goals can help you do, be, and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow yourself to make your life happen.

Successful and happy people have a vision of how their life should be and they set lots of goals (both short-term and long-range) to help them reach their vision. By setting goals you are taking control of your life. It's like having a map to show you where you want to go. Think of it this way. There are two drivers. One has a destination in mind (her goal) which is laid out for her on a map. She can drive straight there without any wasted time or wrong turns. The other driver has no goal or destination or map. She starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver, but she drives aimlessly around, never getting anywhere, just using up gas and oil. Which driver do you want to be?

Winners in life set goals and follow through on them. Winners decide what they want in life and then get there by making plans and setting goals. Unsuccessful people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren't difficult to set, and they aren't difficult to reach. It's up to you to find out what your goals, ideals and visions really are. You are the one who must decide what to pursue and in what direction to aim your life.

Research tells us that when we write a goal down we are more likely to achieve it.Written goals can be reviewed regularly, and have more power. Like a contract(合同) with yourself, they are harder to neglect or forget.

Also when you write your goals in a particular fashion you are able to stimulate yourself to be continuously alert to situations that will further your goals.

  56. The author gave the example of two drivers to show ________.

  58. If people want to reach their goals, they should________.

  A. write down their goals

  59. What is the main idea of this text?

  C. Failure always accompanies the people who gave up easily.

  D. Whenever you set goals, you will succeed.

  (B)

Hugh Troy, a well-known artist, was a very interesting and clever person who spent most of his life playing tricks for the joy of it.

One winter in the 1920s, while a student at Cornell University in New York, Troy got hold of a very old and ugly wastebasket with a real rhinoceros(犀牛)foot as its base. He filled it with metal weights and tied 30 feet of clothes-line to either side. Late one night he and a friend carried it out onto the campus, pulling the lines straight between them. Every few feet they would lower it into the snow, their own footprints so far away as to raise no suspicions(怀疑).

The next morning someone noticed the prints and invited learned professors to come and have a look. Excitedly, they followed the rhinoceros tracks. Then they were led onto the ice covering Beeb Lake, which connected to where the school got its drinking water. There the tracks ended in a huge hole.

It was said that half that population of Cornell stopped drinking tap water. Those who continued to drink it insisted that it tasted like rhinoceros.

  60. Why did Troy fill the basket with metal weights?

  A. To make it easy to tie the lines.

  B. To get rid of these useless things.

  C. To make it heavy enough for prints.

  D. To support the base of the old basket.

  61. Why did someone ask learned professors to examine the prints?

  B. Because the professors might be able to explain what had happened.

  C. Because the professors were looking for this animal just then.

Priscilla Ouchida's"energy-efficient" house turned out to be a horrible dream. When she and her engineer husband married a few years ago, they built a $100,000, three-bedroom home in California.Tightly sealed to prevent air leaks, the house was equipped with small double-paned(双层玻璃的) windows and several other energy-saving features. Problems began as soon as the couple moved in, however. Priscilla's eyes burned. Her throat was constantly dry. She suffered from headaches and could hardly sleep. It was as though she had suddenly developed a strange illness.

Experts finally traced the cause of her illness. The level of formaldehyde(甲醛)gas in her kitchen was twice the maximum allowed by federal standards for chemical workers. The source of the gas? Her new kitchen cabinets and wall-to-wall carpeting.

The Ouchidas are victims of indoor air pollution, which is not given enough attention partly because of the nation's drive to save energy. The problem itself isn't new. "The indoor environment was dirty long before energy conservation came along,"says Moschandreas, a pollution scientist at Geornet Technologies in Maryland. "Energy conservation(保护) has tended to worsen the situation in some cases. "

The problem appears to be more troublesome in newly constructed homes rather than old ones. Back in the days when energy was cheap, home builders didn't worry much about unsealed cracks. Because of such leaks, the air in an average home was replaced by fresh outdoor air about once an hour. As a result, the pollutants produced in most households seldom built up to dangerous levels.

63.What is this passage mainly talking about?

  A. How to build an "energy-efficient" house.

  B. The problem with an "energy-efficient" house.

  C. What is Priscilla Ouchida's opinions.

  A. is well worth the money spent on its construction

  B. is almost faultless from the point of energy conservation

  C. failed to meet energy conservation standards

  D. was designed and constructed in a scientific way

  65. Why were cracks in old houses not a big concern?

  A. Because indoor cleanliness was not emphasized.

  B. Because energy used to be inexpensive.

  C. Because environmental protection was given top priority.

  D. Because they were technically unavoidable.

  66. This passage is most probably taken from an article entitled "________ ".

  A. Energy Conservation

  B. House Building Crisis

  C. Air Pollution Indoors

  D. Traps in Building Construction

Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on follows at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone's satisfaction.

For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else, he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute impolitely; he does so with skill: "I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the colour you mentioned."Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is:"This is the right colour and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on. "

Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only "having a look round". She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary(相反的) to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lockout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

  71. According to the passage, when a man is buying clothes, ________.

  A. he buys cheap things, regardless of quality

  B. he chooses things that others introduce

  C. he does not mind how much he has to pay for the right things

  D. he buys good quality things, so long as they are not too dear

  72. What does the passage tell us about women shoppers for clothes?

  A. They welcome suggestions from anyone.

  B. Women rarely consider buying cheap clothes.

  C. Women often buy things without giving the matter proper thought.

  D. They listen to advice but never take it.

  73. What does a man do when he can not get exactly what he wants?

  A. He buys a similar thing of the colour he wants.

  B. He usually does not buy anything.

  C. At least two of his requirements must be met before he buys.

  D. So long as the style is right, he buys the thing.

  74. Many jokes make fun of women shoppers by saying that________.

  A. they waste money on inferior(劣质的) goods

  B. they should buy only the best clothes

  C. they are much more sensible than men

  D. they think of the price of clothes and nothing else

  75. What is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers?

  A. The fact that men do not try clothes on in a shop.

  B. Women bargain for their clothes, but men do not.

  C. Women stand up to shop, but men sit down.

  D. The time they take over buying clothes.

  (Text 10)

You say you'll have a two-week summer holiday and decide to travel a lot and visit as many new places as possible. I don't think it's a good idea. I'll tell you a story about my friend Mr.Bell. Last July he was in Europe. Europe is very beautiful, but his holiday wasn't very nice. He visited four countries, and was in each of the countries only three days. He visited a great many museums and famous palaces, and was always in a hurry. Mr. Bell was on the train or on a bus almost every day. When he returned from Europe, he was very tired. So I suggest that you spend your holiday in a different way. Better to travel with a friend to one country, and visit only one city. Choose a city on the coast and you'll be able to have a good rest at the seaside.

Some people think advertising directs choices of goods. Advertisements tell recent information about various goods and help to make a better choice. What's more, well-made advertisements are well received by both the young and the old. They are a kind of art works that most people enjoy.

But other people believe some advertisements don't tell real information. As a result, the users lose their money. Sometimes advertisements cover too much space in the newspaper and take up too much time on TV and on the radio. We get tired of advertising when advertisements interrupt our favourite programmes, such as a TV play and a film.

Most people hope advertisements will be greatly improved.
