Part II Reading Comprehension (35 minutes)

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.

  Passage One

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

Unwanted sound, or noise, such as that produced by airplanes, traffic, or industrial machinery, is considered a form of pollution. Noise pollution is at its worst in densely populated areas. It can cause hearing loss, stress, high blood pressure, sleep loss, distraction, and lost productivity.

Sounds are produced by objects that vibrate at a rate that the ear can detect. This rate is called frequency and is measured in hertz, or vibrations per second. Most humans can hear sounds between 20 and 20,000 hertz, while dogs can hear high-pitched sounds up to 50,000 hertz. While high-frequency sounds tend to be more hazardous and more annoying to hearing than low-frequency sounds, most noise pollution damage is related to the intensity of the sound. Measured in decibels, noise intensity can range from zero, the quietest sound the human ear can detect, to over 160 decibels. Conversation takes place at around 40 decibels, a subway train is about 80 decibels, and a rock concert is from 80 to 100 decibels. The intensity of a nearby jet taking off is about 110 decibels. The threshold (下限) for pain, tissue damage, and potential hearing loss in humans is 120 decibels. Long-lasting, high-intensity sounds are the most damaging to hearing and produce the most stress in humans.

Solutions to noise pollution include adding insulation and sound-proofing to doors, walls, and ceilings; using ear protection, particularly in industrial working areas; planting vegetation to absorb and screen out noise pollution; and zoning urban areas to maintain a separation between residential areas and zones of excessive noise.

  21. The word "hazardous" in the second paragraph means "________".

  A) awful B) terrible

  C) unpleasant D) harmful

  22. According to the passage, what is the main damage noise causes to human beings?

  A) Damage to human life.

  B) Damage to human health and spirits.

  C) Damage to traffic.

  D) Damage to residential areas.

  23. The most serious noise pollution is ________.

  A) high-vibrated sounds

  B) high-pitched sounds

  C) long-lasting sounds

  D) high intensity and long-lasting sounds

  24. In order to cope with noise pollution, one should ________.

  A) take measures to improve surroundings outside and inside

  B) pay attention to plant-growing

  C) do one's best to build fewer urban areas

  D) build one's residence far from away traffic jam

  25. The passage focuses on ________.

  A) high-frequency noise

  B) rates and intensity of noise

  C) noise, a danger to mankind

  D) kinds of noise

  Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

Many things about language are a mystery, and many will always remain so. But some things we do know.

First, we know that all human beings have a language of some sort. There is no race of men anywhere on earth so backward that it has no language, no set of speech sounds by which the people communicate with one another. Furthermore, in historical times, there has never been a race of men without a language.

Second, there is no such thing as a primitive language. There are many people whose cultures are undeveloped, who are, as we say, uncivilized, but the languages they speak are not primitive. In all known languages we can see complexities that must have been tens of thousands of years in developing.

This has not always been well understood; indeed, the direct contrary has often been stated. Popular ideas of the language of the American Indians will illustrate. Many people have supposed that the Indians communicate in a very primitive system of noises. Study has proved this to be nonsense. There are, or were, hundreds of American Indian languages, and all of them turn out to be very complicated and very old. They are certainly different from the languages that most of us are familiar with, but they are no more primitive than English and Greek.

A third thing we know about language is that all languages are perfectly adequate. That is, each one is a perfect means of expressing the culture of the people who speak the language.

Finally, we know that language changes. It is natural and normal for language to change; the only languages which do not change are the dead ones. This is easy to understand if we look backward in time. Change goes on in all aspects of language. Grammatical features change as do speech sounds, and changes in vocabulary are sometimes very extensive and may occur very rapidly. Vocabulary is the least stable part of any language.

  26. From the second paragraph we can infer that ________.

  A) some backward race doesn't have a language of its own

  B) some race in history didn't possess a language of its own

  C) any race of human, backward or not, has a language

  D) some races on earth can communicate without language

  27. The author has used American Indian languages as an example to show that they are________.

  A) just as old as some well-known languages

  B) just as advanced as some well-known languages

  C) more developed than some well-known languages

  D) more complex than some well-known languages

  28. Which of the following statements is INCORRECT?

  A) Language is a means of expressing a particular culture.

  B) All languages can very well express their respective cultures.

  C) Some primitive languages can also express their cultures.

  D) Some primitive languages are better than other languages.

  29. According to the authoro, language changes are most likely to occur in ________.

  A) grammar B) pronunciation C) vocabulary D) intonation

  30. How many things about language are mainly discussed in the passage?

  A) Two. B) Three. C) Four. D) Five.

  Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

If I had to select a word that best describes the majority of American parents, that word would be GUILT-RIDDEN. How sad it is to see parents become the willing victims of the "give-me" game, only to discover that no matter what they do, it isn't enough. In the end, they are despised for their lack of firmness and blamed when their spoilt children get into trouble. With this in mind, I shall first answer the question: "What do parents owe their children?" and I shall start with what they don't owe them.

Parents don't owe their children every minute of their day and every ounce of their energy. They don't owe them round-the-clock car service, singing lessons, tennis lessons, expensive bicycles, a motorcycle or a car when they reach sixteen, or a trip to Europe when they graduate.

I take the firm position that parents do not owe their children a college education. If they can afford it, they can certainly send them to the best universities. But they needn't feel guilty if they can't. If the children really want to go, they'll find a way. There are plenty of loans and scholarships for the bright and eager who can't afford to pay.

After children marry, their parents do not owe them down payment on a house or money for the furniture. They do not have an obligation to baby-sit or to take their grandchildren into their home when the parents are on vacation. If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor, not an obligation.

In my opinion, parents do not owe their children an inheritance, no matter how much money they have. One of the surest ways to produce a loafer is to let children know their future is assured.

  31. Whom is the author condemning?

  A) The guilt-ridden parents.

  B) The spoilt children.

  C) All the parents.

  D) All the children.

  32. Which of the following inferences is TRUE?

  A) Parents ought to send their children to college as a duty.

  B) Parents will feel guilty if they are unable, for whatever the reason, to send their children to college.

  C) If they can't afford, parents should take loans for their children to go to college.

  D) Parents must support their children even after their marriage.

  33. The word "loafer" in the last paragraph most probably refers to ________.

  A) an industrious person

  B) a hard-working person

  C) an aggressive person

  D) a lazy person

  34. The author's attitude towards the parents is ________.

  A) disproving B) ironical

  C) respectful D) affirmative

  35. The main idea of this passage is ____ __.

  A) children despise their parents

  B) the distinction between parents' duties and the children's

  C) over-devotion to the children results in trouble for the parents themselves

  D) how a loafer is produced

  Passage Four

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

Let us look now at some examples. A department store's inputs include the land upon which the building is located, the labor of the employees, capital in the form of building, equipment and merchandise, and the management skills of the store managers. On a farm, the operation system is the transformation that occurs when a farmer's inputs (land, equipment, labor, etc.) are converted into such outputs as corn, wheat or milk. The exact form of the conversion process varies from industry to industry, but it is an economic phenomenon that exists in every industry. Economists refer to this transformation of resources into goods and services as the production function. For all operation systems, the general goal is to create some kind of value-added outputs that are worth more to consumers than just the sum of the individual inputs. To the consumers, the resulting products offer utility due to the form, the time, or the place of their availability from the conversion process.

However, the process is subject to random fluctuations. Unplanned or uncontrollable influences may cause the actual output to differ from planned output. Random fluctuations can arise from external disruption (fire, floods or lightning, for example) or from internal problems inherent in the conversion process. Inherent variability of equipment, material imperfections, and human errors all affect output quality. In fact, random variations are the rule rather than the exception in production processes; therefore, reducing variation becomes a major management task.

The function of the feedback is to provide information linkages. Without some feedback of information, management personnel cannot control operations because they don't know the results of their directions.

  36. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

  A) The transformation process of a department store from inputs into outputs is different from that of a farm.

  B) The conversion process of a department store from inputs into outputs is the same as that of a farm.

  C) The transformation process can be totally free from random fluctuations.

  D) Random fluctuations are important to the conversion process.

  37. Which of the following will not result in random fluctuations?

  A) Unreliable equipment.

  B) Cash input.

  C) Management skills.

  D) Earthquake.

  38. The main idea of the second paragraph is that ________.

  A) the transformation process from inputs into outputs can not be free from random fluctuations

  B) random fluctuations can be eliminated from the transformation process from inputs into outputs

  C) human errors are the sole causes for random fluctuations

  D) the inherent problems in the transformation process are the most important for random fluctuations

  39. It can be inferred from the passage that random fluctuations ________.

  A) is good for the desired transformation

  B) will affect the quality of the goods produced

  C) can provide information for the managers as feedback

  D) does not help to provide enough information for the managers

  40. What is the passage mainly about?

  A) The transformation process.

  B) The function of feedback.

  C) The random fluctuations.

Part IV Short Answer Questions (15 minutes)

Directions: In this part there is a short passage with five questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words (not exceeding 10 words).

In recent years many countries of the world have been faced with the problem of how to make their workers more productive. Some experts claim the answer is to make jobs more varied. But do more varied jobs lead to greater productivity? There is evidence to suggest that while variety certainly makes the worker's life more enjoyable, it does not actually make him work harder. As far as increasing productivity is concerned, then, variety is not an important factor.

Other experts feel that giving the worker freedom to do his job in his own way is important, and there is no doubt that this is true. The problem is that this kind of freedom cannot easily be given in the modern factory with its complicated machinery which must be used in a fixed way. Thus while freedom of choice may be important, there is usually very little that can be done to create it.

Another important consideration is how much each worker contributes to the product he is making. In most factories the worker sees only one small part of the product. Some car factories are now experimenting with having many small production lines rather than one large one, so that each worker contributes more to the production of the cars on his line. It would seem that not only is degree of worker contribution an important factor, therefore, but it is also one we can do something about.

To what extent does more money lead to greater productivity? The workers themselves certainly think this is important. But perhaps they want more money only because the work they do is so boring. Money just lets them enjoy their spare time more. A similar argument may explain demands for shorter working hours. Perhaps if we succeed in making their jobs more interesting, they will neither want more money, nor will shorter working hours be so important to them.

  Section B Passages

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).

  Passage One

Graham Hawkes remembers the first time he saw a whale. Waiting for a companion, the animal was motionless and vertical. This caused him to realize that life in the three-dimensional space of the oceans need not confine itself to "upright" positions.

He remembered this lesson when designing Deep Flight I, a one-person underwater vehicle launched in California's Monterey Bay last October. Instead of remaining upright at all times and reaching the depths by sinking, the airplane-like craft can "fly" through the water in any direction at speeds up to 12 knots-using battery powered thrusters and movable control surfaces to turn the flow of water over its short, thick wings. The pilot lies reclined in the 15-foot-long vehicle, looking out through its nose.

Built by Hawkes Ocean Technologies at a cost of $1 million, Deep Flight I can dive to depths of 3,300 feet. The experimental vehicle, sponsored in part by television and film companies, is equipped with a variety of camera seats. However, its primary purpose is as a technology demonstrator for the development of Deep Flight Ⅱ, which will be designed to transport explorers to the very bottom of the ocean.

Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard.

11.When did Hawkes suddenly realize that in the three-dimensional space of the oceans life need not confine itself to "upright" positions?

  12.What is Deep Flight I?

13.What is the main purpose of this experimental vehicle?

  Passage Two

As the car industry develops, traffic accidents have become as familiar as the common cold. Yet, their cause and control remain a serious problem that is difficult to solve. Experts have long recognized that this discouraging problem has multiple causes. At the very least, it is a problem that involves three factors: the driver, the vehicle, and the roadway. If all drivers exercised good judgment at all times, there would be few accidents. But that is rather like saying that if all people were honest, there would be no crime. Improved design has helped make highways much safer. But the tide of accidents continues to rise because of human failure and an enormous increase in the number of automobiles on the road. Attention is now turning increasingly to the third factor of the accident, the car itself. Since people assume that accidents are bound to occur, they want to know how cars can be built better to protect the drivers.

Questions 14 to 16 are based on the passage you have just heard.

14.What does the speaker think of the causes of automobile accidents?

15.What measure has been taken to reduce car accidents?

16.What remains an important factor for the rising number of road accidents?

  Passage Three

The animals you would have seen on a typical farm in Massachusetts in the early 1800's would not look quite the same as the ones you might see in the 1980's. In colonial times settlers brought cattle and sheep with them to America from various parts of Europe.Because the settlers were busy building houses, clearing land and planting crops, they had little time to care for their animals. The cattle and sheep had to fend themselves and females were bred to whatever bulls or rams in the neighborhood. These matings resulted in mixed breeds of cattle and sheep that were hardy enough to survive under adverse conditions. As the herds grew, they provided the settlers with meat as well as milk and wool. That was almost all the 19th-century farm families needed, enough food for themselves and a little surplus that could be traded for things they couldn't produce at home. Now the survival of farm animals is not so precarious. 38. A).

  Part III Vocabulary and Structure

  47. C).in honour of"为纪念……,向……表示敬意",符合题意.on behalf of"为了,代表"; by virtue of "依靠,由于",均不符合题意.

  50. A). 当陈述句以 never, seldom, rarely, hardly/scarcely (...when), no longer, not until, no sooner... (than), not only, only +状语,so +状语等开头时,须用倒装语序,其谓语中的助动词、情态动词或连系动词to be放在主语之前.

  54. A). 故应选as.

  56. B).be liable for"对……有法律责任的,对……有义务的",符合题意.be liable to"很可能……,大概……;易于(受)……的,有……倾向的,易患……病的",如:The areas of town near the river are liable to flooding.

  59. D).数词three后应当用可数名词quarter的复数,"一小时时间"应该是an hour's time.

  60. D).用"It was...that..."

  63. A).When asked the reason for their success可视为When they were asked...

It was how well more than how loud she sang that impressed me.

该结构可扩展为定语从句:from which you suspend your tent.

  Part V Writing

A Letter to a Professor Wang

  May 5th, 2004

  Dear Professor Wang,

I hope you will still remember me. I am Li Ming, one of your students. I am writing to ask for your help. I wish to enroll in the Language and Culture course at Shanghai Foreign Language Institute, for which I need a letter of recommendation.

Since you are my most respected college teacher, a famous scholar in the field of Language and Culture, you are my most suitable referee.

As you know, I am very interested in language and culture, in which I have laid a solid foundation and written several these after nearly four years of study. I would be grateful if, in the letter, you would confirm that I have adequate qualifications to follow the course. Would you be so kind as to give a brief introduction to my academic performance during my undergraduate studies? In addition, your personal opinion about me will also carry special weight. I have to submit the letter next week.

Thank you very much for your help in this matter.

  Yours sincerely,

  Li Ming
