为了表示对重要往事或故人的怀念之情，汉英两种语言各有特定的表达方式。在汉语里，多借助于起目的状语作用的短语，“为了纪念(怀念)……”引出全句。那么，英语的对应表达法有几种呢？本文拟将最常见的几种归类如下：

　　(一)译为短语in memory of...

　　in memory of...是汉语“为了纪念……”的最直接等值对应表达方式。就修辞而言，in memory of...适用于各种文体和场合。

　　试看实例：

　　1. 为了纪念抗日烈士，在市中心建造了一座纪念堂。

　　A memorial hall was set up (was built, was established) in the centre of the town in memory of the martyrs of the war of Resistance Against Japan.

　　2. 为了纪念这次乒乓球友好邀请赛的成功，人们共同栽下了六棵松树。

　　In memory of the Table Tennis Friendship Tournament, people planted six pine trees.

　　(二)译为短语in commemoration of...或直译成动词commemorate

　　动词commemorate 在英英辞典中的注释是：give honor to the memory of...，因而由名词commemoration构成的惯用短语in commemoration of...多表示对重大事件的纪念活动或重要人物的深切怀念。这是一种具有书面语体色彩的短语，尤其多用于宗教活动。

　　试看实例：

　　1. 本星期天将举行宗教仪式，以纪念在战争期间死去的人。

　　On the coming Sunday a religious service will be held in commemoration of those who died in the war.

　　2. 立纪念碑是为了纪念胜利的。

　　The monument was built to commemorate the victory.

　　(三)译为短语with a view of marking...

　　众所周知，with a view of 本身就是惯用短语，并解作“由于……”或“鉴于……”等。只有当with a view of 之后接marking时,才有in memory of...的意思。

　　试看实例：

　　1. 为了纪念鸡年的来临，邮电部发行了一枚特种邮票。

　　The Ministry of Posts and Tele-communications has issued a special commemorative stamp, with a view of marking the coming of Year of Cock.

　　2. 为了纪念这些重要的历史事件，本周日将举行一次群众集会。

　　With a view of marking these important historical events, a rally will be held on the coming Sunday.

　　(四)译为动词memorize

　　试看实例：

　　1. 为纪念郑成功收复台湾三百四十周年，国家邮政局特发行纪念邮票一套。

　　In order to memorize the recapturing of Taiwan by Zheng Chenggong for 340 years, the National Postal Bureau specially issued a piece of commemorative stamp.

　　2. 为纪念青藏铁路开工，国家邮政局特发行纪念邮票一枚。

　　In order to memorize the starting of Qing—Zang Railway, the National Postal Bureau specially issued a piece of commemorative stamp.
