1. used to

　　used to现在归属为情态动词，其后接动词原形，通常可译为“过去常常”。它表示的是过去存在的某种状态或经常性、习惯性发生的动作或行为，但现在已不再存在或发生。因此，它不可用于现在时，只能用于过去时态中。例如：

　　(1) He used to be a teacher. 他过去是一位教师。(暗指现在已不是了)

　　(2) I used to get up early. 我过去总是早起。(暗指现在不早起了)

　　(3) There used to be a hospital on that corner. 在那个拐角处曾有一家医院。(暗指现在已没有了)

　　used to的否定形式为used not to，也可缩写为usedn't / usen't to；疑问式为：Did+主语+use to...?或Used+主语+to...?在现代英语口语中，更倾向于用did和did not来构成疑问式或否定式。例如：

　　(1) She usen't / didn't use to like meat. 她过去不喜欢吃肉。

　　(2) I usedn't / didn't use to make that mistake. 我过去不大犯那样的错误。

　　(3) Did you use to go to school by bike? (=Used you to go to school by bike?) 你过去常骑自行车上学吗？

　　(4) Did you use to take a walk after supper? (=Used you to take a walk after supper?) 你过去晚饭后常常散步吗？

　　此外，used to和would有时很相近，两者都可以表示过去习惯性动作。但是，它们的具体用法却有所不同。请看：

　　used to是用来客观地表示过去的习惯或状况。would则表示过去的反复的动作，较为主观地表示说话人的感慨等，富有感情色彩，且would后面只可接行为动词，不可接连系动词。例如：

　　(1) My mother used to cook food with coal. 我母亲过去总是用煤烧饭。

　　(2) “You are a child.” he would say. 他过去常常说“你是个小孩子。”。

　　(3) I used to be a university student. 我曾经是个大学生。

　　[误] I would be a university student.

　　2. be used to sth. / doing sth.

　　be used to中的to为介词，used是形容词，其后可以接名词、代词或动名词，be used是系表结构，表示“习惯于”。be有时可以换为get或become，以表示“逐渐习惯于”。它可以用于多种时态中。例如：

　　(1) She was not used to Japanese dishes. 她吃不惯日本料理。

　　(2) He has been used to driving in all kinds of weather. 他已经习惯于在各种天气中开车。

　　(3) You'll soon get / become used to working here. 很快你将会习惯在这儿工作的。

　　3. be used to do sth.

　　be used to do sth. 是动词use的被动语态，意为“被用来做某事”。这里的不定式表示目的，它可用于多种时态中，不可与系表结构的be used to sth. 相混。例如：

　　(1) Cotton can be used to make cloth. 棉花能用来制布。

　　(2) Wood is used to make paper. 木材被用来造纸。

　　(3) A knife is used to cut bread. 小刀用来切面包。

　　4. be used for

　　be used for意为“被用于……方面”，后面常接名词或动名词。例如：

　　(1) Bamboo can be used for building. 竹子可用于建筑方面。

　　(2) The paper is used for newspaper. 这种纸被用来印刷报纸。

　　5. be used as

　　be used as意为“被当作……用”。例如：

　　(1) The fork can be used as a tool. 叉子被用作工具。

　　(2) That room was used as a laboratory. 那个房间被当作实验室用。
