I. more than

　　1. 表“多于、超过”，其后面常跟数词或相当于数词的词。如：

　　More than 1,000 people attended the meeting. 一千多人参加了会议。

　　You don't need to bring me more than a few magazines. 你只要带少数几本杂志就够了。

　　2. more than用于形容词、名词、动词之前，表示“不止、超过”。如：

　　She is more than pretty. 她何止漂亮。

　　Hibernation is more than a sleep. 冬眠何止是一种睡眠。

　　Bamboo is used for more than building. 竹子不仅仅用来造房子。

　　I more than saw it, I felt it too! 我不仅仅是看见了它，我都感觉到它了。

　　3. more than 用于比较从句中，表示“更、胜过”，可以省去主语部分谓语，保留宾语。如：

　　I love him more than her. 我爱他胜过爱她。

　　It's natural that a mother loves her baby even more than her life. 很自然的，一个母亲爱她的婴儿甚至胜过她自己的生命。

　　II. more... than...

　　1. 用于表语中，比较两个形容词，这时不管形容词有多少个音节，都要用“more+形容词... than+形容词”结构，其意思相当于“是……而不是、与其说是……不如说是”。如：

　　That little girl is more shy than timid. 那个小姑娘是害羞而不是胆怯。

　　She is more diligent than clever. 与其说她聪明，不如说她勤奋。

　　He looked more asleep than dead. 他看起来，与其说是死了，不如说是睡着了。

　　2. more... than... 也可用于名词作表语的结构中。如：

　　She is more mother than wife. 她是贤妻，更是良母。

　　He is more friend than headmaster. 说他是校长，不如说他是朋友。

　　以上两句还可以写成：

　　She is more a mother than a wife. 或She is more of a mother than a wife.

　　He is more a friend than a headmaster. 或：He is more of a friend than a headmaster.

　　3. more... than... 也可用于名词作主语的结构中。如：

　　More women than men are good at doing at clever work. 女人比男人更善于做细致的工作。

　　More children in villages than children in cities work hard at their lessons. 农村的孩子比城市的孩子更刻苦学习功课。

　　4. more... than... 也可用于名词作宾语的结构中。如：

　　It'll do you more harm than good. 它会对你害多益少。

　　What he said brought his son more encouragement than discouragement. 他的话给他的儿子带来的鼓励多于泄气。

　　5. more... than... 也可用于介词短语的结构中。如：

　　He is more for her proposal than for my proposal. 他赞成我的提议，但更赞成她的提议。
