　　every fourth year =every four years

　　every 与基数词、序数词、other 和few 连用，表示时间或空间的间隔，意为“每……；每隔……”。如：

　　He comes here every three days (every third day). 他每三天(每隔两天)来这儿一次。

　　You'd better plant a tree every five meters(every fifth meter). 你最好每(隔)5米种一棵树。(树的空间忽略不计)

　　Write on every other line. 隔行写。

　　every other day 每隔一天

　　every few days 每隔几天(注意“few”前没有“a”)

　　2. He became emperor of Rome. (P93)

　　表示正式的或独一无二的头衔、职位的可数名词，如chairman, captain, president, monitor等，如果在句中充当表语、补语(主补或宾补)或同位语，前面往往省略冠词。如：

　　Who is captain of your team? 你的队长是谁？

　　John was elected (They elected John) chairman of the committee. 约翰当选为(他们选约翰为)委员会主席。

　　3. Suppose you want to tell your best friend that you have a dog. (P99)

　　suppose:

　　<1>构成祈使句，常用以提出一项建议或提议。如：

　　Suppose we go (=Let’s go) for a swim. (我提议)我们去游泳吧。

　　<2>同if ，相当于supposing 的用法，常引导条件状语从句。如：

　　Suppose / Supposing it rains, what’s to be done? 假定天下雨，那该怎么办？

　　Suppose / Supposing you had one million dollars, what would you do? 假如你有一百万美元，你会做什么？

　　4. The Norman invasion of England in A.D. 1066 had great influences on the English language. (P100)

　　influence：

　　<1> n. 影响(力)；感化(力)。常构成以下搭配：

　　influence on (upon)... 对……有影响；

　　under the influence of... 受……的影响。如：

　　Environment is one of the influences on character. 环境是影响性格的因素之一。

　　Many a woman has had a civilizing influence upon her husband. 许多妇女对其丈夫有感化力。

　　<2> vt. 意为“have an effect on ...”对……有影响。如：

　　The moon influences the tides. 月亮对潮汐有影响。

　　relate:

　　<1> vt. 意为“使……产生联系”。如：

　　It is difficult to relate the two cases. 这两个案件很难扯上关系。

　　<2> vi. relate to: have reference to... 与……有关系。如：

　　She is a girl who notices nothing except what relates to herself. 她是个只注意与她有关的事情的女孩。

　　<3> be related (to...): be connected by family (to...);

　　be connected (with...) (与……)有亲戚关系；(与……)有关系。如：

　　We are somewhat related. 我们有点亲戚关系。

　　She says she is related to the royal family. 她说她与王室有亲戚关系。

　　He insisted that he was not related to that case.他坚持说他和那个案件无关。
