　　<1> honour vt. : show respect for sb. / sth.

　　Will you honour me with a visit? 如蒙造访则荣幸之至。

　　I'm honoured that you should notice me. 您注意到我，我感到十分荣幸。

　　I'm honoured to be asked to speak here. 承蒙邀请在这里讲话，我感到非常荣幸。

　　<2> have vt. 让发生某情况(使役动词)

　　have sb. do sth. 让某人做某事

　　I won't have him cheat me. 我不能让他欺骗我。

　　2. And Hermes was so delighted with his honesty that he made him a present of the other two axes as well.(P64) 赫耳墨斯对他的诚实感到如此高兴，又把另外两把斧头也送给了他。

　　<1> be delighted with 对……感到高兴

　　She was delighted with the boat in every way. 她对这条船的各个方面都感到满意。

　　<2> make sb. a present / make a present to sb. 送给某人一样东西

　　They make a present of $ 80 to him. 他们送给他80 元钱。

　　Let me make you a present of it. 让我把它送给你吧。

　　3. And on hearing the cause of his tears , he dived in, produced a gold axe as before, and asked if it was the one that had been lost. (P65) 一听了他哭泣的原因，赫耳墨斯就马上潜入水中，像以前一样变出一把金斧头，并问这是否是丢失的那一把。

　　on / upon: at or immediately after the time or occasion of 一…… 就……

　　On his return form Europe, Lester set to work. 莱斯特一从欧洲回来就着手工作。

　　4. The god was so shocked at what he did, that, far from giving him the gold axe, he did not even return his own to him.(P65) 这个神(赫尔墨斯)对他的行为感到如此震惊，他不但没给他这把金斧头，甚至连他自己的那把也没还给他。

　　far from 远不是……；不仅不…… (而且……)。后面跟动名词短语或形容词。

　　The show was far from being a failure; it was a great success. 这场演出不仅不是失败，而且是巨大的成功。

　　It is far from perfect. 这件事远不完美。

　　5. “I would have come in ,” said the fox, “but I saw a lot of tracks going in and none coming out .” (P65) 狐狸说：“我本想进去，可我看到了许多脚印进去，却没有出来的。”

　　I would have come in. 是一个对过去情况虚拟的句子。这个虚拟句的条件隐含在上下文中，我们从上下文中可以读出这个条件，因此将其省略。这样的虚拟句叫含蓄条件句。 如：

　　He would have given you more help, but he has been so busy.

　　(If he has not been so busy, he would have given you more help. ) 他本来要多给你一些帮助的，可是他太忙了。
