Shui: Tell us about some of the secret weapons, or you know, the techniques, skills that you possess. Like, you know, the topspin5) forehand6), and you know people say the fancy footwork, especially when you're on the clay court7).

  Nadal: I don't know. It's natural. I practice a lot.

Shui: That's because of Uncle Toni, or...?

Nadal: Sure, sure. My Uncle Toni helped me a lot about my tennis. It was very important for me to have my coach, and I must say “thank you very much” always to my Uncle Toni. But to be a good player, it is important to enjoy the sport, and practice hard, because if you're not practicing hard, it's very difficult to improve.

Shui: And even today you practice usually ten hours a day?

Nadal: No! Normally I practice about three hours when I am at home, and one hour and a half physical performance.

Shui: You said many times that you like to play, and playing tennis is a happy thing. Can you tell us something more about this kind of feeling? What is that which makes you happy?

Nadal: Well, I love the competition. I am a competitor. Playing tennis is fun, but at the same time you have pressure, too, when you go on court. I think when you are younger, you have less pressure, and it's easier to go on court. Right now when I go on court I have a little bit more responsibility. It's different. But anyway, I love the competition and I like the pressure too.

Shui: I can see some kind of aggressive feelings and the desire to fight and beat in your eyes. But now here in front of me, you誶e like a young brother, a very simple-minded young boy.

Nadal: When I am on court, I am with more pressure. And when I am here, I am a very normal guy, you know, nothing special.

Shui: Just one year ago when you are having an interview with some American reporters, you were quoted as saying that the things that worry you most are injury and losing. Is that true?

Nadal: Injury is very tough always. Losing—it's tough, but after three days you are competing again. Injury is more difficult, because when you are injured, you can't compete, you are outside of the tennis, outside of the competition, outside of everything! And it's very tough mentally.

Shui: That's right. And losing—in my understanding, it's kind of a philosophy. You know, in the sport like tennis, no one can guarantee he will win all the way.

Nadal: We know! When I am starting a tournament, I know only one can win the tournament, and we are 64 or 100 playing the tournament. So every week, some of us lose! It's normal to lose, you know. We accept that. Some players accept better than others. I am a good loser. When I lose sometimes, it's tough in the first half an hour, but later I accept.

Shui: Now you're number two, and Roger is number one. And this continued for some time. And I know actually one of your goals is to be number one.

Nadal: Well, I will try, but it's not an obsession. I am very happy being number two because I have a lot of points, and I won a lot of titles, so I am a good number two right now. But, sure, I try to be number one some day. I always try my best.

Shui: Tell us something about your relationship with Roger.

Nadal: Well, we have very good relation. He's a very nice guy.

Shui: What is your understanding of Roger Federer's being number one for so long?

Nadal: Well, because he a perfect player. I've never seen any player in the history like him. Very good serve, very good volley, very good slice, very good backhand, very good forehand—everything is very good. So, that's his secret.
