英语自选模块试卷
第一题 阅读理解(分两节,共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题。
Most of the treasure-hunters are driven by two emotions. 1 It is the same feeling that drives people to bet on sporting events or other similar things. This is generally not greed: more the realization of dreams. Who does not wish to be rich? Treasure-hunters are sometimes lucky, just as some people win the bets, but often the time, effort and money spent are greater than the material rewards. So why do it? Probably because of the excitement.
2 It is a searching for evidence and a following of trails(踪迹), along the paths of earlier adventurers. There is mystery (神秘): the search for something which is known or doubted to exist. There is the mysterious quality of the treasure, often based on the stories that go with its original discovery or hiding away – for example, the history of those whose burial places were filled with treasure, such as the young Egyptian king Tutankhamun or the Chinese emperor Shi Huangdi, who was buried with life-sized models of his complete army. The sad stories of people caught up in natural disasters a long time ago such as the victims at Pompeii, or the unlucky people who went down with the Titanic, add to the mystery of lost treasure.
3 For example, pirate (海盗) gold. Stolen after years of careful planning or taken without previous planning, the treasure had to be hidden away and the pirates’ tracks covered before it could be enjoyed. Often accidents or bad luck happened to the pirates before they could return, yet somehow their stories were passed on, while their treasure was buried in ever-greater secrecy.
4 There is more to treasure-hunting than simply going out to look for it. Careful planning is a must: finding out what to look for and where, gaining permission and researching the laws on different kinds of treasure – both looking for it and dealing with it if you strike lucky. Some people become so absorbed in treasure-hunting that they end up devoting their entire lives to it. For others, it remains a hobby. But for all, there is the excitement of the hunting.
