Bilingual children outperformchildren who only speak one language in problem-solving skills andcreative thinking, according to research led at the University ofStrathclyde。

A study of primary school pupils whospoke English or Italian- half of whom also spoke Gaelic orSardinian- found that the bilingual children were significantlymore successful in the tasks set for them. The Gaelic-speakingchildren were, in turn, more successful than the Sardinianspeakers。

The differences were linked to themental alertness required to switch between languages, which coulddevelop skills useful in other types of thinking. The furtheradvantage for Gaelic-speaking children may have been due to theformal teaching of the language and its extensive literature。

In contrast, Sardinian is not widelytaught in schools on the Italian island and has a largely oraltradition, which means there is currently no standardised form ofthe language。

Dr Fraser Lauchlan, an HonoraryLecturer at the University of Strathclyde’s School of PsychologicalSciences & Health, led the research. It was conducted withcolleagues at the University of Cagliari in Sardinia, where he is aVisiting Professor。

Dr Lauchlan said: “Bilingualism isnow largely seen as being beneficial to children but there remainsa view that it can be confusing, and so potentially detrimental tothem。

“Our study has found that it canhave demonstrable benefits, not only in language but in arithmetic, problem solving and enabling children to think creatively. We alsoassessed the children’s vocabulary, not so much for their knowledgeof words as their understanding of them. Again, there was a markeddifference in the level of detail and richness in description fromthe bilingual pupils。

“We also found they had an aptitudefor selective attention- the ability to identify and focus oninformation which is important, while filtering out what is not-which could come from the ‘code-switching’ of thinking in twodifferent languages。”

In the study, a total of 121children in Scotland and Sardinia- 62 of them bilingual- were settasks in which they were asked to reproduce patterns of colouredblocks, to repeat orally a series of numbers, to give cleardefinitions of words and to resolve mentally a set of arithmeticproblems. The tasks were all set in English or Italian and thechildren taking part were aged around nine。

During the research, Dr Lauchlan’spost at the University of Cagliari was funded by the SardinianRegional Government (Regione Autonoma della Sardegna). he study hasbeen published in the International Journal of Bilingualism。
