四、形容词和副词(Adjective and Adverb)

　　形容词和副词是英语语法的重要组成部分。考生在形容词和副词方面遇到的问题主要涉及下列内容:

　　1)形容词和副词的误用;

　　2)形容词和副词的词序;

　　3)某些在词义上易混淆的形容词和副词;

　　4)有关形容词比较级用法方面的问题;

　　5)由形容词或副词与其他词所组成的固定结构。

　　例1: I should say Henry is not much a writer as a reporter.

　　A. that　B. so　C. this　D. that

　　[答案] B. so

　　[注释] not so much ... as意为"与其说是……还不如说是……"。

　　[译文]我应该说，亨利与其说是作家还不如说是记者。

　　例2: I won't pay＄20 for the coat; it's not worth .

　　A. all that much　B. that much all　C. that all much　D. much all that

　　[答案] A. all that much

　　[注释] much在此是代词，作worth的宾语，that来说明much的程度；all作状语，说明that much，起加强语气的作用。

　　[译文]我不愿付20美元买这件外套；它不值那么多钱。

　　例3: He got up, walked across the room, and with a sharp quick movement flung the door .

　　A. widely open　B. wide open　C. widely openly　D. wide openly

　　[答案] B. wide open

　　[注释] wide作副词用，意为(=to the full extent, fully)充分地,完全地; wide open作宾语补语。例如：His eyes are wide open.(他的眼睛睁得大大的。)此句中wide open作表语。又如：Open your mouth wide.(把嘴张大。)

　　[译文]他站起身来，穿过房间并且猛然把门推开。

　　例4: The radio was of inferior quality that I took it back and asked for a better one.

　　A. such　B. so　C. more　D. even

　　[答案] A. such

　　[注释] such是形容词，后接名词，如本句中quality；而so是副词，后接形容词或副词，如：The classroom is so large that it can hold fifty people.

　　[译文]这台收音机质量太差，因此我拿回去要求换一台更好的。

　　例5: He knows little of mathematics, and of chemistry.

　　A. even more　B. still less　C. no less　D. still more

　　[答案] B. still less

　　[注释] still less意为"更谈不上"。"更谈不上……"常用的表达方式如下：much less, let alone, not to speack of, to say nothing of, not to mention。

　　[译文]他几乎不懂数学，更不用说化学了。

　　例6: Aftershavingsgone far, George did not want to turn back.

　　A. enough　B. much　C. such　D. that

　　[答案] D. that

　　[注释] that作程度副词,意为"那么"。

　　[译文]乔治已经走了那么远，不想再转回来。

　　例7: , more than 200 houses and buildings are heated by solar energy, not to mention the big cities in the region.

　　A. Alone in the small town　B. In the small alone town

　　C. In the alone small town　D. In the small town alone

　　[答案] D. In the small town alone

　　[注释] alone in the small town意为"单独一人在这个小镇里"；而in the small town alone意为"仅仅在这个小镇里"。

　　[译文]单单在这个小镇上，有200多座房子和建筑物是用太阳能取暖的，更不用说在这个地区的大城市内了。

　　例8: The problem of unemployment the governments want solved is as serious as in underdeveloped countries.

　　A. ever　B. never　C. even　D. yet

　　[答案] A. ever

　　[注释] ever (=at any time before) (过去)任何时间。the governments want solved是定语从句，作宾语的关系代词省略。solved是过去分词作宾补。例如：I want the work finished by Saturday. (我想这项工作在周六前结束。)

　　[译文]这些政府要解决的失业问题和不发达国家中任何时候遇到的失业问题同样严重。

　　例9: There is no reason they should limit how much vitamin you take, they can limit how much water you drink.

　　A. much more than　B. no more than

　　C. no less than　D. any more than

　　[答案] D. any more than

　　[注释] not any more than (=no more ... than)意为"与……一样都不"。

　　[译文]他们没有理由要限制你摄入维生素的量,同样他们也不能限制你的喝水量。

　　例10: The heart is intelligent than the stomach, for they are both controlled by the brain.

　　A. not so　B. not much　C. much more　D. no more

　　[答案] D. no more

　　[注释] no more ... than与……一样都不……。

　　[译文]心脏和胃一样都没有智力，因为它们都是由大脑控制的。

　　例11: Similar elements in the prehistoric remains from both areas suggest that Indians and their neighbours had maintained distant but real connections before 1500 BC.

　　A. ever　B. even　C. never　D. still

　　[答案] B. even

　　[注释]本题属副词的选择。suggest在本句中意为"表明,暗示"，而不是"建议"，故不是欲望动词，其后所接的宾语从句中谓语用陈述语气。

　　[译文]来自两个地区史前遗址中的类似因素表明，印第安人和他们的邻居们甚至在公元前1500年以前就保持着不太明显的但真实的联系。

　　例12: Do you enjoy listening to records? I find records are often or better than an actual performance.

　　A. as good as　B. as good　C. good　D. good as

　　[答案] A. as good as

　　[注释] as good as表示形容词同级比较。

　　[译文]你喜欢听唱片吗？我认为，唱片常常和实际演出一样好或更好。

　　例13: Andrew, my father's younger brother, will not be at the picnic, to the family's disappointment.

　　A. much　B. more　C. too much　D. much more

　　[答案] A. much

　　[注释] much作副词，修饰介词短语，如:Much to my surprise, she forgot our meeting.(使我感到十分惊讶的是他居然忘记了我们的会面。)

　　[译文]使我们全家感到失望的是，我父亲的弟弟安德鲁将不参加这次野餐会。

　　例14: Help will come from the UN,but the aid will be near what's needed.

　　A. everywhere　B. somewhere　C. nowhere　D. anywhere

　　[答案] C. nowhere

　　[注释] nowhere near(=certainly not, far from)是成语，意为"离……很远；远不是"。例如：Fifty dollars is nowhere near enough. (50美元是远远不够的。)

　　[译文]援助将来自联合国，但是这次援助将远远不是所需要的物资。

　　例15：Smoking is so harmful to personal health that it kills people each year than automobile accidents.

　　A. seven more time　B. seven times more

　　C. over seven times　D. seven times

　　[答案] B.seven times more

　　[注释] more是many的比较级形式，修饰people。seven times是度量状语，来说明more的程度。

　　[译文]吸烟对人体健康非常有害，因此每年死于吸烟的人数比死于汽车交通事故的人数多七倍。

　　例16：The solution works only for couples who are selfemployed, don't have small children and get along to spend most of their time together.

　　A. so well　B. too well　C. well as　D. well enough

　　[答案] D. well enough

　　[注释]形容词或副词+enough+to do sth.是惯用搭配。

　　[译文]这个解决办法只对于个体户、没有小小孩并且相处融洽能在一起欢度时光的夫妇适用。

　　例17：Greatly agitated, I rushed to the apartment and tried the door, to find it locked.

　　A. just　B. only　C. hence　D. thus

　　[答案] B. only

　　[注释] only+动词不定式置于谓语动词后作结果状语用,表示与主语的主观愿望相反的客观结果,例如: He went to the seaside to swim only to be drowned. (他到海边去游泳,结果却被淹死了。)

　　[译文]我很激动，跑到公寓，想开门，但结果却发现门被锁上了。

　　例18：In the long run, however, this hurry to shed fulltime staff may be harmful to industry as it is to the workforce.

　　A. more　B. so　C. such　D. as

　　[答案] D. as

　　[注释] as ... as ...与……一样……。such是形容词,不能作程度状语修饰其他形容词;除非形容词后有名词,则such和该形容词一起修饰该名词。so不能入选,因为在原级形容词比较时,肯定句中必须用as ... as,而否定句中则可用not so ... as;现代英语中也常用not as ... as。

　　[译文]然而,从长远观点来看,这样匆忙打发掉全时工可能对行业和劳工都是有害的。
