　　经典例题444 There is more argument on the kinds of behaviors referred to by the term than there is on how to interpret or classify them.（1992年）

　　结构分析:句子的框架是There is more something（argument）on A than there is on B，即人们对于A的争论比对B的多。A和B各是什么呢?A是the kinds of behaviors referred to by the term，此术语（即前文所提到的主题intelligence）所指的各种行为;B是how to interpret or classify them，如何对它们（既这些行为）进行解释分类。本句的关键是找出主干结构more on…than on…，理顺逻辑关系，再用更合乎汉语习惯的语言翻译出来。

　　经典例题445 Probably there is no one here who has not in the course of the day had occasion to set in motion a complex train of reasoning，of the very same kind，though differing in degree，as that which a scientific man goes through in tracing the causes of natural phenomena.（1993年）

　　结构分析:句子的框架是这样一句型:Probably there is no one here…。后边紧跟一定语从句修饰no one:who has not had occasion to do something（in the course of the day）。这里定语从句里的否定与主句的否定一起构成双重否定，目的是加强语气:大概不会有谁一天到晚都没有机会去…。后面的不定式的内容也很复杂:set in motion意为“进行”;train这里指一系列、一连串的东西，a complex train of reasoning即一连串的思考;the same…与as…被though differing in degree隔开。这里“the very same kind as that…”就是指“与…完全同一类型（的思考）”，very用在名词性结构前，往往起强调作用。

　　参考译文 大概这里不会有人一整天都没有机会进行一连串复杂的思考活动。这些思考活动与科学家在探索自然现象原因时所经历的思考活动，尽管复杂程度不同，但在类型上却是完全一样的。

　　经典例题446 Science moves forward，they say，not so much through the insights of great men of genius as because of more ordinary things like improved techniques and tools.（1994年）

　　结构分析:句子的框架是Science moves forward，…，not so much…，as…。they say作插入语。注意这里这个比较级的理解和翻译:not so/as much as，译为“与其…不如…”。

　　参考译文 他们说科学的进步与其说是源自天才伟人的远见卓识，不如说来源于改进的技术和工具等较为普通的东西。

　　经典例题447 Odd though it sounds，cosmic inflation is a scientifically plausible consequence of some respected ideas in elementary_particle physics，and many astrophysicists have been convinced for the better part of a decade that it is true.（1998年）

　　结构分析:句子的框架是Odd though it sounds，cosmic inflation is…。“odd though it sounds”为倒装形式的让步状语从句，相当于“though it sounds odd”。主句较长，但如果弄清其中的专业名词与词组，倒也不难理解。for the better part of…意思是“…的大半/大部分”，在此句中结合a decade译为“七、八年”。两个代词it都指代句中的cosmic inflation，翻译时应明确译为“宇宙膨胀说”。

　　经典例题448 Interest in historical methods has arisen less through external challenge to the validity of history as an intellectual discipline and more from internal quarrels among historians themselves.（1999年）结构分析:句子的框架是:Interest（in historical methods）has arisen less through A and more from B，这里的less和more便暗含一种轻重，或者说主次关系，即主要由于B，其次由于A。译为“主要是因为…，其次是因为…”。这里的historical methods是指关于历史研究的治学之道，直译作“历史的方法”显然不够达意。另外要注意对external challenge to the validity of history as an intellectual discipline的理解翻译，challenge意为“挑战，不认同”，后面紧跟一介词to引导的定语来修饰它。可译为“对历史作为一门学科的正确性提出质疑”。

　　参考译文 人们之所以关注历史研究的方法论，主要是因为历史界内部意见不一，其次是因为外界并不认为历史是一门学问。

　　经典例题449 And home appliances will also become so smart that controlling and operating them will result in the breakout of a new psychological disorder—kitchen rage.（2001年）

　　结构分析:句子的框架是个so…that结果状语从句:And home appliances will（also）become so smart that…。result in意为:导致，引发。
