  I. He found it hard to get along with the other boys. (L 50)

  [知识点] get along /on with意为"与……相处;某事进展/进行……".

  [考例]

  1. Readers can _______ quite well without knowing the exact meaning of each word. (NMET' 93)

  [分析]此题考查动词词义辨析.get over意为"克服,战胜,掌握;恢复常态(如病后、受惊之后等)"; get in意为"收集或收获某物"; get along = get on意为"与……相处;某事进展……"; get through意为"设法做或完成……;与……联系(尤指通电话)".此题的意思是"在不知道每个单词的确切意思的情况下,读者也能顺利地读下去".故答案为C.

  II. The period between 1905 and 1915 was an important one for Einstein.(L 50)

  [知识点] one为代词,代替可数名词单数,且为同名异物,前面无冠词,表示泛指;若有冠词the表示特指.

  [考例]

  3. Meeting my uncle after all these years was an unforgettable moment, _______ I will always treasure. (NMET2002)

  [分析]例2 one代替a little break,break是可数名词单数,意为"间歇、停歇".答案为C.例3 one代替moment,在句中作moment的同位语,后面是省略了that/which引导的定语从句来修饰它.意为"我永远珍惜的这一时刻",表示泛指.答案B.

  III. Einstein began the research and studies which lead to his new discoveries in physics. (L 50)

  [知识点] lead to意为"导致、引起",后跟结果,to为介词,后跟名词、代词或动名词.

  [考例]

  4. The discovery of new evidence led to _______ . (2003上海)

  A. the thief having caught

  B. catch the thief

  C. the thief being caught_______

  D. the thief to be caught

  [分析]the thief与catch之间是被动关系,故用动名词的被动语态,选C.

  IV. He worked out just how much the light would be bent.(L 51)

  [知识点] work out在此句中意为"计算出,解出".还可意为"按某种方式发展;结果……;解决某事;设计某事物".

  [考例]

  5. We didn't plan our art exhibition like that but it _______ very well. (NMET2001)

  A. worked out B. tried out C. went out D. carried on

  [分析]此题意为"我们并没有像那样计划艺术展,但结果却很好."故答案为A.

  V. They are wondering what to do today. (L 53)

  [知识点]在动词wonder, ask, consider, decide, explain, find out, know, show, tell等动词后,不接不定式,常接疑问词what, which, how, when, where等+ to do.

  [考例]

  6. I've worked with children before, so I know what _______ in my new job. (NMET2000)

  A. expected B. to expect C. to be expecting D. expects

  7. It is said in Australia there is more land than the government knows _______ .

  (NMET2002)

  A. is what to do with

  B. what to do it with

  C. what to do with it______________

  D. to do what with it

  [分析]例6、例7都是know后跟疑问词what+ to do sth.,例6答案选B,例7选C.

  VI. So far as I know, it's free. (L 53)

  [知识点] so/as far as有两层含义:一是"跟……一样远";二是"就……而言".

  [考例]

  8. -How far apart do they live?

  - _______ I know, they live in the same neighbourhood. (2003上海)

  A. As long as B. As far as C. As well as D. As often as

  [分析] as long as意为"跟……一样长;只要",引导条件状语从句;as well as意为"跟……一样好;也,同"; as often as意为"经常".故答案为B.

  VII. To escape the pull of the earth, a rocket must reach a speed of 28,440 km/h. (L 54)

  [知识点]不定式to do作目的状语.

  [考例]

  9.-Mum, why do you always make me eat an egg every day?

  - _______ enough protein and nutrition as you are growing up. (1999上海)

  A. Get B. Getting C. To get D. To be getting

  10. _______ late in the afternoon, Bob turned off the alarm. (2001北京)

  [分析]例9用why提问,回答时用不定式作目的状语,答案为C;例10由下文鲍勃关上了闹钟,说明他下午要多睡一会儿,故用不定式作目的状语,答案为A.

  VIII. Ships and planes can be warned so that they can keep out of the path of the hurricane. (L 54)

  [知识点] so that在此句中引导目的状语从句,这时从句中常有情态动词can, could, may, might等.so that引导结果状语从句,从句中一般不带情态动词.

  [考例]

  11.John shut everybody out of the kitchen _______ he could prepare his grand surprise for the party. (NMET2002)

  A. which B. when C. so that D. as if

  [分析]此题考查引导状语从句的连词的用法.四个选项中,which作关系代词引导定语从句,也可作连词引导名词性从句; when作关系副词引导定语从句,也可作连词引导时间状语从句;so that既引导目的状语从句又引导结果状语从句; as if可引导表语从句和方式状语从句.语境显示的是约翰把每个人赶出去的目的是……,故

  答案为C.

  IX. Her parents were dead and had left her a lot of money. (L 58)

  [知识点] leave在此句中意为"将某物遗赠给某人" .leave还可意为"离开某人或某处;使……处于某种状态;留下,交代下某物".

  [考例]

  12. If anybody calls, tell them I'm out, and ask them to _______ their name and address. (NMET2003)

  A. pass B. write C. take D. leave

  [分析]此题考查考生在特定语境下辨别词义的能力.根据句意"如果有人给我打电话,告诉他们我外出了,请他们留下姓名和地址".故此题选D.

  X. They talked until they heard the uncle return home. (L 59)

  [知识点] until/till的用法.当主句是肯定句时,主句中用延续性动词,until/till译为"干……一直到……";当主句是否定句时,主句用短暂性动词,not...until译为"直到……才……".

  [考例]

  13. A good storyteller must be able to hold his listeners' curiosity _______ he reaches the end of the story. (2003上海)

  A. when B. unless C. after D. until

  14. -Was his father strict with him when he was at school?

  -Yes. He had never praised him _______ he became one of the top students in his grade. (2003北京)

  A. after B. unless C. until D. when

  [分析]例13的意思为"一个好的讲故事者必须抓住听众的好奇心,一直到故事的结尾",故此题选D.例14容易错选B.unless作"除非……"解时,是一种假设的情况,而此题讲述的是一个实情,"直到当他成为全年级最好的学生之一时,他父亲才表扬他".故此题选C.
