  VII.阅读理解.(20分)

  (A)

We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.

Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity(and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed-no examination is perfect-but to have no external tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in external examinations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on the efficiency, the ideal and the purpose of each teacher.

Without external examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly re-

spected schools and from families known to them-a form of favoritism will replace equa-

lity. At the moment, the bright child from an ill-respected school can show certificates to prove he or she is suitable for a job, while the lack of a certificate shows the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defence of excellence and opportunity would disappear if external examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her school's fame, unable to compete for employ-

ment with the child from the favoured school.

The opponents(反对者)of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, different, academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by computer.

These people are not just against school organisation, but are at war with the whole idea of modern competitive society and they are using children in schools for their destructive(破坏性的)purposes. There is no reason why we should allow such people to determine the way our schools are organised when it is to the obvious disadvantage of the pupils, of the schools and of our society as a whole.

  D. Schools for bright children would lose their fame.

  3. The situation at the moment is that _______ .

  A. many children who are suitable for a job have no proof of their suitability

  B. a school's fame is not important, as long as a child has a certificate

  10. W: I liked Professor Smith's lecture this morning.

Part Three You'll hear a dialogue. Listen carefully and choose the correct answer for each question.

  W: Good morning.

  M: Good morning, Ellen.

W: What a wonderful morning! Don't the flowers smell wonderful?

M: Yes, they do. That's why I'm reading my paper and having my coffee outside this morning.

W: How was your meeting last night? You must have come home very late. Did you find thesandwich I made for you?

M: Thanks, dear. I was so tired that I didn't even finish it.

W: Philip, I've been working on this special project and I'd like to have your opinion about it.

  M: What is it?

W: I've been trying to find a way to encourage reading. I work with families every day. I see how people spend their spare time-young and old.

  M: Watching TV?

W: Yes. The question is how we get them to read more?

M: I think you're going to give me the answer to that question. You have that look in your eyes.

W: I do have an answer. I will put every family into a reading project by arranging with the public schools to give them one hour a week to do some reading. During that time, parents are invited to attend and to read along with their children.

M: It can go beyond the school system, Ellen. But you

  can have a try first.

Part Four You'll hear a passage. Listen carefully, then answer the following questions.

Isn't it amazing how much time we spend talking about food?"Have you eaten?" "What did you have for lunch?"...And yet when you travel from one country to another, you'll find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal, and that what other people eat is strange or silly. In most parts of Asia, for example, no meal is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating, like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink large amounts of beer, and the French drink wine every day.

The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese don't like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy eating raw fish.

So it seems that although eating is a topic that we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in what we say about it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to change our eating habits.

As you all know, the teacher's job is very important and necessary for social and economic development. To me, it is a pleasure to be with children. They make you feel young. I don't think it a waste of time to teach children. On the contrary, it's a valuable job. That's all. Thank you.
