冠词仅有三个：不定冠词a, an和定冠词 the, 但很多学生对冠词的使用感到特别困难，不仅是由于汉语没有冠词，而且由于冠词用法尽管有规律可循，但特例却太多。有时，冠词的使用仅仅是个习惯用法问题，很难用几项语法条文加以概括。例如，疾病名称通常是不可数名词，其前不用冠词：My uncle is sick. He has cancer.(BII L77)但是头疼、咳嗽时却要用冠词 I have a headache and a cough.(BII L69) 有时在catch (a) cold中，人们又不用冠词。像这类的用法及特殊用法不胜枚举，只有通过接触大量地道的英语才能逐步掌握。但是冠词的基本用法却有如下几条：

　　一、第一次提到某一事物时，常用不定冠词；表示泛指某类人或物(以及其中的任何一个或某一个)，辅音音素前用a, 元音音素前用an。
