  The two of us are very fortunate to have worked for some of the finest global finan-

  cial institutions during our careers, and learnt from many talented people in the business. We are extremely grateful for the opportunities and invaluable experiences.

  The 1987 Black Monday, market jitters during the unsuccessful management buyout on United Airlines in 1989, the Gulf War in January 1991, the collapse of the venerable Barings Bank caused by rouge trader Nick Leeson, the exuberance and excesses of the Internet bubble and the unavoidable subsequent massive market correction, the Asia financial markets crisis, and the collapse of Long Term Capital Management (LTCM) were some of the key events that took place during our careers.

  In our humble attempt to sum up the lessons learnt from our careers, we feel that consistent hard work, professional integrity, work ethics, fair dealing, placing customers?interests first, vigilance, tenacity and good judgment are the key success factors in order to thrive in this exciting and yet extremely demanding business.

  For anyone who aspires to join this industry, putting in great amount of effort to prepare for it is an absolute prerequisite. The reasons are very simple: 1) how can you excel in this intensive business if you are not willing to commit time and effort to learn when your learning curve is the steepest? 2) How can you be good in this knowledge-based industry if you are not motivated and have an inquisitive mind? 3) How can you gain the confidence of your colleagues and win the trust of your clients if you are not committed?

  In the old business paradigm, financial institutions offered their products and services derived from three advantages: 1) transactional, 2) informational and 3) interpretational. With the advent of technology, professionals in the global financial services has only one distinct advantage deemed to be of high value add to their clients- interpretational advantage. To thrive and be differentiated in this aspect inevitably has to do with people. Specifically, it is the ability to device solutions to meet the business and financial aspirations of clients.

  Finally, the single most important factor that will remain forever essential, regardless of time, market, location and type of business, unquestionably has to be integrity. Without that, no market of any competent jurisdiction can function with effectiveness. This, has to originate from the individuals serving in the industry.

  我们在金融领域任职期间,先后经历了1987年的“黑色星期一”;1989年经理层融资收购(management buyout)美联航(United Airlines)的失败导致整个市场的恐慌;1991年的海湾战争;无法无天的交易员(rouge trader)Nick Neeson导致历史悠久的巴林银行(Barings Bank)的倒闭;互联网的兴起繁荣和互联网泡沫的破灭以及随之不可避免的大幅度的市场回调(massive market correction);亚洲金融市场危机;1998年长期资本管理(Long Term Capital Management)公司破产案等事件。

  谨此归纳我们在金融领域从业以来获得的经验和教训,我们认为:努力工作、正直诚实、具有职业道德、公平交易、将客户的利益放在第一位、敏锐的警觉性、坚忍不拔的品质和良好的判断力,这些是在这个振奋人心然而又要求极高的行业大展身手、获得成功的重要因素。

  对于任何一位立志从事金融业务的人来讲, 事先做出超乎常人的巨大努力是绝对的先决条件。原因很简单:1)如果你不愿意牺牲时间付出努力,你的学习曲线(learning curve )弧度陡峭,如何在这个竞争激烈的领域脱颖而出? 2)如果你既不积极主动也不勤学好问,如何在这个以专业知识为基础的行业领先?3)如果你没有忠诚于事业的精神,如何争取到同事对你的信心和客户对你的信任?

  依照以前的商业惯例,金融机构提供的产品和服务源于以下三方面的优势:1)交易性(transactional); 2)信息性(informational); 3) 诠释性(interpretational)。随着科技的进步,如今全球金融业的专业服务只具有一个突出的优势:诠释性优势——它可以为客户带来高附加值的服务。为了使这项优势充分发挥并且与众不同,对人才的重视是不可避免的。具体地讲就是要找到那些有能力设计各种各样的解决方案以满足客户开展业务进行投资要求的人才。

  最后,最重要的一点,无论时间、市场、位置、业务类型如何不同,它都永远是最关键的即:正直诚实。缺乏这个因素,任何具有司法规模的市场都不能有效地运作。这项因素可以追溯到为金融行业服务的个人。
