Part II Reading Comprehension (35 minutes)

You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

  Passage One

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

As we know, it is very important that a firm should pay attention to training of its staff as there exist many weak parts in its various departments. Staff training must have a purpose, which is defined when a firm considers its training needs, which are in turn based on job descriptions and job specifications.

A job description should give details of the performance that is required for a particular job, and a job specification should give information about the behavior, knowledge and skills that are expected of an employee who works in it. When all of this has been collected, it is possible to make a training specification. This specifies what the Training Department must teach for the successful performance of the job, and also the best methods to use in the training period.

There are many different training methods, and there are advantages and disadvantages of all of them. Successful training programs depend on an understanding of the difference between learning about skills and training in using them. It is frequently said that learning about skills takes place "off the job" in the classroom, but training in using these skills takes place"on the job", by means of such activities as practice in the workshop.

It is always difficult to evaluate the costs and savings of a training program. The success of such a program depends not only on the methods used but also on the quality of the staff who do the training. A company can often check on savings in time and cost by examining the work performed by the workers and technicians who have completed a training program. The evaluation of management training is much more complex than that.

  21. To be successful in our training programs, we must understand the difference between________.

  A) a job description and a job specification

  B) what is taught and how it is taught

  C) learning about skills and training in using them

  D) the savings in time and the savings in cost

  22. The success of a training program depends on .

  A) the place where the training takes place

  B) the correct evaluation of the costs and savings of the program

  C) the performance of the workers and technicians trained in the program

  D) the training methods and the quality of the training staff

  23. A training specification specifies________.

  A) the performance required for a certain job

  B) the behavior, knowledge and skills expected of an employee

  C) the training contents and methods

  D) the costs and savings of the program

  24. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

  A) As there exist weak parts in different departments of a firm, the training of its staff is highly necessary.

  B) A training specification is based on the information collected from a job description and a job specification.

  C) Training in using skills and learning about skills usually do not happen at the same place.

  D) It is easier to evaluate management training than to evaluate the training of workers and technicians.

  25. The best title for this passage might be________.

  A) A Successful Training Program

  B) How to Describe and Specify a Job

  C) Staff Training Program

  D) The Importance of Training Workers and Technicians

  Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:

The free enterprise has produced a technology capable of providing the American consumer with the largest and most varied marketplace in the world. Technological advances, however, have come hand-in-hand with impersonal mass marketing of goods and services. Along with progress, too, have come some instances of manipulative advertising practices and a great increase of products whose reliability, safety and quality are difficult to evaluate.

Today's consumers buy, enjoy, use and discard more types of goods than could possibly have been imagined even a few years ago. Yet too often consumers have no idea of the materials that have gone into the manufacturer's finished product or their own motivation in selecting one product over another.

Easy credit and forceful techniques of modern marketing persuade many consumers to buy what they cannot afford. The consequent overburdening of family budgets is a problem for consumers at all economic levels. It is not unusual for families to allocate 20 percent or more of their income to debt repayments without understanding the effect this allocation has upon other choices. Some families have such tight budgets that an illness, a period of unemployment, or some other crisis finds them without adequate reserves.

In addition to the growing complexity of the market, consumers are sometimes faced with unfair and deceptive practices. Although there are laws designed to protect the consumers, there is not a sufficient number of law enforcers to cover all the abuses of the marketplace.

An adult in today's society should be knowledgeable in the use of credit. He should understand what is involved in purchasing a house, and the many pitfalls to be avoided when entering into financial agreements. He should know enough about advertising and selling techniques to enable him to discern the honest from the deceptive. He should be knowledgeable about consumer protection laws so that he can demand his rights. When he needs help, he should know the private and public sources to which he can turn for assistance.

  26. This passage is concerned mostly with________.

   A) the free enterprise system in America

   B) the difficulty of living on a fixed income

   C) innovative techniques in food processing

   D) the advances of advertising techniques

  27. The author implies that________.

  28. Consumers often do not know________.

   A) the brand names of products they buy regularly

   B) why they purchase certain products

   C) the current interest rates on savings accounts

   D) where to buy cheaper things

   A) are unprepared for financial emergencies

   B) forget to claim interest charges on their income tax forms

  Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

In the United States, the need to protect plant and animal species has become a highly controversial and sharply political issue since the passage of The Endangered Species Act in 1973. The act, designed to protect species' living areas, and policies that preserve land and forests compete with economic interests. In the 1990's, for example, the woodcutters in the Western United States were challenged legally in their attempt to cut trees for timber in the Cascade Mountains. The challenge was mounted to protect the endangered spotted owl, whose remaining population occupies these forests and requires the intact, ancient forest for survival. The problematic situation set the interests of environmentalists against those of corporations and of individuals who stood to lose jobs. After months of debate and legal battles, the fate of the woodcutters-and the owls-was still undecided in mid-1992.

Similar tensions exist between the developed and the developing nations. Many people in industrialized nations, for example, believe that developing nations in tropical regions should do more to protect their rain forests and other natural areas. But the developing countries may be impoverished, with populations growing so rapidly that using the land is a means to temporarily avoid worsening poverty and starvation.

Many of the changes to Earth that concern scientists have the potential to rob the planet of its biological richness. The destruction of Earth's ozone layer, for example, could contribute to the general process of impoverishment by allowing ultra-violet rays to harm plants and animals. And global warming could wipe out species unable to quickly adapt to changing climates. Clearly, protecting will come only through coordinated international efforts to control human population, stabilize the composition of the atmosphere, and preserve intact Earth's complex web of life.

  31. Why does the author say that the protection of endangered species is a highly controversial issue?

  A) Because people can't agree as to what species to protect.

  B) Because it is difficult to find an effective way to protect such species.

  C) Because it affects the interests of certain groups of people.

  D) Because it is a major problem involving a series of legal procedures.

  32. According to the passage, the preservation of rain forests________.

  A) may hamper a developing country in its fight against poverty

  B) benefits developed countries rather than developing countries

  C) should take priority over the control of human population

  D) will help improve the living conditions in developing countries

  33. According to the passage, cutting trees to grow more food________.

  A) will widen the gap between the developed and the developing countries

  B) is but a short-term relief to the food problem

  C) can hardly alleviate the shortage of food

  D) proves to be an effective way out for impoverished nations

  34. Among"humanity's current problems"( Para. 3), the chief concern of the scientists is________.

  A) the impoverishment of developing countries

  B) the explosion of the human population

  C) the reduction of biological diversity

  D) the effect of global warming

  35. The author's purpose in writing this passage is________.

  A) to describe the difficulties in solving humanity's current problems

  B) to present the different views on humanity's current problems

  C) to analyze the contradiction between countries in dealing with humanity's current problems

  D) to point out that humanity's current problems can only be solved through the cooperation of nations

  Passage Four

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

"We are about to lay off approximately 300 well-qualified people in a broad range of engineering and support disciplines... If you are interested in reviewing the resumes of some of those affected, we invite you to send along a list of your requirements."

This is part of a letter recently sent from a Philadelphia-based division of a General Electric(GE) company to 1, 200 personnel managers across the United States. The GE division decided to lay off 300 professional and skilled workers because of decreased work contracts from government and private organizations. While GE could have simply laid off the workers, they also decided to help the workers get new jobs. Management developed a very comprehensive program "to help place its workers with other companies, to help them continue in jobs with other divisions of General Electric, or to begin entirely new careers."

In addition to the mass mailings of letters to 1,200 nationally based personnel managers, other actions GE took were:

   1) The following ad was placed in The New York Times and The Philadelphia Inquirer: "A message to corporate recruiters seeking people skilled in a different discipline," the ad headline read. "We invite you to match your company's personnel needs to technical employees."

   2) An employee placement representative was assigned to each "lack-of-work" employee to review his or her goals; help prepare a resume that best represented individual goals, talents, and experience; and provide assistance in seeking out and following through on employment opportunities.

   3) Telephones were made available to all affected employees, and GE's rational dial-comm telephone network provided long-distance service.

  Part IV Cloze (15 minutes)

Directions: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. For each blank there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should choose the ONE that best fits into the passage.

In 600 B.C., the Assyrian Empire had just fallen. At its height, it had extended from Egypt to Babylonia, for an extreme length of 1,400 miles. It was soon to be 71 the Persian Empire, which extended from Cyrenaica to Kashmir, for an extreme length of 3,000 miles. Undoubtedly, the common 72 of these empires had only the vaguest 73 of the extent of the realm and were content to live and die on their own few 74 or, on some occasions, to travel from village to 75 village. Travelers and soldiers, however, must have had some 76 of the vastness of these empires and of the still greater vastness of what must lie beyond. There must have been in the ancient empires those who occupied themselves with what might be considered the first cosmological(宇宙论的) problem 77 scholars: Is there an end to the Earth? To be sure, no man in ancient times, however far he traveled ever came to any 78 end of the Earth. At most, he reached the 79 of an ocean whose limits were beyond the horizon. If he transferred to a ship and sailed outward, he never 80 in reaching the end either. Did that mean there was no end? The answer to that question depended on the general shape one 81 for the Earth. All men, before the time of the Greeks, made the 82 that the Earth was flat, as indeed it appears to be, 83 the minor irregularities of the mountains and valleys. If any pre-Greek ancient thought otherwise, his name has not 84 to us and the record of his thinking has not 85 . Yet if the Earth were indeed flat, an end of some sort would seem an almost foregone 86 . The alternative would be a flat surface that would go on forever and forever-one that would be infinite in extent, in other words. This is a most uncomfortable concept; throughout history, men have 87 to avoid the concept of endlessness in space and time as something impossible to 88 and understand and therefore something that cannot easily be worked with or 89 about. On the other hand, if the Earth does have an end-if it is 90 there are other difficulties. Would not people fall off if they approached the end too closely?

  Passage One

When Americans refer to various parts of the country, the way in which they divide the country and the terms they use may be confusing to foreign visitors. When referring to the part of the United States that lies between Canada and Mexico, citizens of Alaska speak of "the Lower Forty-eight". Citizens of "the Lower Forty-eight" have long referred to this same territory as"the United States". People living in the state of Hawaii refer to the rest of the country as "the Mainland" and refer to their own state as "the Islands".

People in " the Lower Forty-eight" divide that part of the United States in ways that are partly political, partly geographical. New England is that section of the country North and East of New York State, settled 300 years ago by the English. The South is that area of the country East of the Mississippi River and South of the Ohio River.

Americans speak two of the Southwest, which includes particularly Arizona, New Mexico and Western Texas.

The Northwest is clearly the states of Washington and Oregon. The state of California is often referred to as the West Coast.

Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard.

  11. How do people in Hawaii refer to the rest of the United States?(B)

  12. What states are included in the Northwest?(B)

  13. Which is the most suitable title for the passage you have just heard?(A)

  Passage Two

Many university students dislike studying history because there is little to get excited about when historical events are presented in a boring manner. However, I'll never forget my American History Professor, Dr. Williamson. Each event leaped from the pages of our test and became as real as the daily news report on the radio. My favorite lecture concerned the American Revolution. Dr. Williamson set the mood for the story by imitating Paul Revere, a well-known silversmith, working in his shop. The American colonies were angry because of the British control over their lives, Revere felt that the war between the British and the colonists was going to happen immediately. Then, Dr. Williamson told us about Revere rowing across the Charles River from Boston on April 18, 1775. I can see the professor now as he raised his hand to his forehead as if he were looking across the Charles River to the Old North Church in Boston. Suddenly, Revere spotted two lanterns, a signal which meant that the British would attack by sea. He jumped on his horse to warn the villages of the attack. Professor Williamson reminded us that the first battles of the American Revolution were fought at Concord and at Lexington, Massachusetts, the year before the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Never before had history seemed so alive to me. And all because a professor cared enough to put his heart into his teaching.

  Part II Reading Comprehension

  Passage One

  Passage Two

  Passage Three

理解了这一点,再根据using the land is a means to temporarily avoid worsening poverty and starvation,这样就能推断出B)是正确答案。

  Passage Four

  Part V Writing

  Honesty

Honesty means speaking the truth and being fair and upright. Considered as a virtue, it is admired in every country and every culture. A person who lies and cheats is dishonest. Dishonesty is generally looked down upon as an evil.

As the English proverb goes, honesty is the best policy. For one thing, if you want to be trusted and respected by your friends, you must be honest. A liar is always looked down upon by other people. For another, if you want to succeed in your work, the first qualification you should have is honesty.

However, there are people who try to get benefits by dishonest means. For example, some students copy the exercises done by others or cheat in examinations, in order to get good marks. Those people may succeed for a time, but sooner or later, they will be washed out. In the end, dishonesty will bring them nothing but troubles.
